Second Part of the Fifth Round of Plastics Treaty Negotiation Coming Up

The second part of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment (INC-5.2), is scheduled to take place from 5 to 14 August 2025 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Supreme Court Sets $1 Billion Precedent in X-Press Pearl Nurdle Spill Case

After relentless petitions by Sri Lanka’s civil society organisations, including BFFP-AP member Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ), the nation’s highest court has ordered USD 1 billion in compensation from corporate actors responsible for marine pollution following a plastic nurdle spill in June 2021.


Experts say the ruling’s repercussions will echo across South Asia and beyond.

Trump Administration Guts the Clean Air Act and Shutters the EPA Office of Research & Development

The Trump Administration recently rolled back the landmark Biden-era rule on National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants, which strengthened protections for frontline communities who are exposed to a wide range of toxic gases, such as ethylene oxide, chloroprene, and benzene.


Separately, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) eliminated a key office – the Office of Research & Development – whose research and work underpins nearly all of EPA’s environmental health regulations, from clean drinking water standards to the health risks associated with toxic chemical exposure.
