U.S. Recycling Rate Has Fallen Below 6% + California Takes Action

A new report from #breakfreefromplastic members Beyond Plastics and The Last Beach Cleanup demonstrated that the U.S. plastic recycling rate dropped to less than 6% for 2021, while the per capita generation of plastic waste has increased by 263% since 1980!


A few days before that report’s publication, the Attorney General for the State of California launched a first-of-its kind investigation into the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries' "half-century campaign of deception" that is responsible for "causing and exacerbating the global plastics pollution crisis" and perpetuating "myths around recycling." Importantly, the Attorney General issued a subpoena to ExxonMobil as part of the investigation.

Floods in Durban, South Africa: Reflections From the Front Line

On the morning of April 12th, residents of Durban, South Africa, fled from rising waters swallowing homes and neighbourhoods. Bobby Peek⁠—who serves as groundWork director (Friends of the Earth South Africa) and commissioner on the South African Presidential Climate Change Commission⁠—joined his neighbours in filling sandbags and protecting his community in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province.


These are the realities of the climate crisis, as well as the opportunities for us to work together for a better future.

“Against Toxic Plastics” in Mexico

In its May ecology supplement, the Mexican newspaper La Jornada published their journalistic piece "Against Toxic Plastics: The Circular Economy", which serves as a comprehensive document on the plastic pollution crisis in Mexico and its perspective in the global context.

Host free screenings of the "WHY PLASTIC?" documentaries

The Why Foundation has released three cutting-edge documentary films that dig deep into what happens to plastic trash, investigate the industry’s pledges, and unveil the local and global effects of plastics on both the environment and people's health. Filmed across the globe and revealing the latest scientific research, "WHY PLASTIC?" busts the myths and misinformation on plastic, taking a closer look at what is fact and what is fiction.


BFFP members are invited to host screenings of the "WHY PLASTIC?" documentary series for free in connection with activities or campaigns until 07 June 2022.
