The Fourth Round of Negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty Is Coming!

The fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment (INC-4), is scheduled to take place from 23 to 29 April 2024 at the Shaw Center in Ottawa, Canada.

The fourth session is a pivotal moment where we can make or break the Global Plastics Treaty. Pressure on the negotiation process is high as we move into the last year of the process and are still far from a Treaty that would truly address the plastics crisis, including the harms that plastic causes to communities across its entire life cycle. New U.S. EPA Rule Protects Frontline Communities from Toxic Petrochemicals

In a historic victory driven by BFFP US members RISE St. James, Concerned Citizens of St. John, The Descendants Project, Fenceline Watch, Earthjustice, California Communities Against Toxics, and many more, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released new landmark rules limiting the release of cancer-causing pollutants, including ethylene oxide and chloroprene.

The rule will significantly increase air monitoring for more 200 of the most polluting industrial facilities in the nation and is estimated to reduce 6,200 tons of air pollution annually. While imperfect, the rule is largely seen as one of the strongest rules issued in the history of the Clean Air Act.

First-Ever Brand Audit Report in Belize Calls for Refill Systems

Caribbean organization Sea of Life kicked off a national waste audit campaign across Belize. Their spring report reveals top polluters as Crystal Drinking Water and The Coca-Cola Company. Year-round audits are part of their comprehensive #MorePrideLessPlastic program which educates, trains, and accelerates local co-created solutions for plastic pollution. The report further supports their push for refillable water on school campuses in Belize.
