Subject: Bohart's Bulletin | 7 June 2018

Dear Friend:

B
ohart was incorporated five years ago but has been bootstrapping along for about seven. Bootstrapping is an amusing term that originates from the absurd turn of phrase: “to pull oneself up by one’s bootstraps.” According to the fine folks at Wikipedia, in its nineteenth century origins, the originating phrase implied that “someone is attempting or has claimed some ludicrously far-fetched or impossible task.” In its more contemporary guise, bootstrapping has taken on mostly positive meanings of self-start-ability, or going-it-all-or-mostly-all-alone, or building-something-from-(almost)-nothing. Bohart has been moving forward slowly but a little too slowly, yet still surely work has continued, often in more fits than starts. Things are picking up speed.

The financial support of the Bohart 100 (to date it counts twenty-eight members) and the growing number of Bohart Friends (see below to join their legion) has contributed to the launch of one issue (so far) of Bohart’s magazine (see below) and a handful of screenings for audiences in Port Moody of some pretty exceptional films (Alexander Kluge’s 1967 film Artists Under the Big Top: Perplexed was screened in the Venosta, a 1921 rail car).

Last year, Bohart was awarded a welcome and suitably modest grant from the Canada Council for the Arts for in support of the development of the still-a-work-in-progress exhibition, Gardenface. The second issue of Bohart’s magazine (twice the size of the first) will be launched a couple of times in a couple of places in September 2018 (more on that to come). Over the coming weeks and months Bohart will share a raft of upcoming program and related initiatives rolling out over the 2018/2019 year.

Now that you are up to speed about Bohart’s goings-on of late, I thank you for thinking of us from time-to-time. Thank you for not giving up. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your past, present, and presumptive future support. Thank you for your continued interest in, and support of, Bohart. Thank you for getting in touch with me at ge@bohart.ca if have any questions or comments.
