Bohart presents Spontaneous Compositions, an intimate concert featuring the duo of Jack Campbell on violin and Hank Bull on piano. The program invites listeners into a lively musical exchange between violin and piano, where chamber music, jazz, and spontaneous invention meet.
Spontaneous Compositions offers a rare occasion to hear internationally acclaimed musician Jack Campbell perform close to his Anmore home. “I was raised here and became fascinated by sound as a child immersed in the natural acoustic and ecological soundscapes of this place,” says Campbell. “To have the opportunity to share my music with my home community is both nourishing and joyful.”
Campbell describes the collaboration with Bull as a meaningful meeting of musical imaginations. “I have admired Hank’s work in all disciplines for most of my teenage and adult life,” he says. “To get to work with such a force in Canadian culture and such a wise and sensitive musician is inspiring and invigorating.” For Bull, Campbell’s background in classical and contemporary music offers an engaging counterpoint to his own formation in blues, jazz, and improvised music. “This leads us both to make interesting discoveries,” says Bull. “New things happen regularly in our music, which we look forward to sharing with the audience.”
Campbell and Bull have performed together for several years. In 2024, they released their first CD, Inventions, and have appeared at Telus Garden, 8East, Western Front, 881 Gallery, the Vancouver Symphony School of Music, and Lobe in Vancouver, where they performed in an immersive eight-channel sound environment. Their most recent recording is the LP Planets, featuring improvised music with a group of five musicians.
Jack Campbell: Acclaimed as a “virtuoso violinist” by the BBC, a “young master of the arts” by the London Daily News, and “prodigiously gifted” by The Strad, violinist and composer Jack Campbell has toured extensively as recital soloist throughout Canada, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Ukraine, the United States, and Wales. Campbell has released four LPs of solo and chamber music on major labels and has featured in numerous video and installation projects, as well as a shot documentary film. He is a member of Lightsounds Duo (Cheslav Singh, England), Duologue (Pwyll Ap Sion, Wales), Wood & Campbell Violin Duo (Jasper Wood, Vancouver), the No Room For Error Trio (Andreas Kahre and Alexander Varty, British Columbia), and Inventions Duo (Hank Bull, Vancouver). Notable collaborations and appearances include the United Nations Summit of the Future, the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park, the Canadian Embassies in England and France, Chester, Carlisle, and Wrexham Cathedrals, and numerous cultural organizations within his home country of Canada. Campbell has also been a featured guest at the University of St. Gallen and the Technical University of Dortmund. His work is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (UK), the Tommy Flowers Foundation (UK), and the Canada Council for the Arts.
Hank Bull: For over 50 years, Hank Bull has pursued a multi-disciplinary practice that combines painting, photography, performance art, radio, shadow theatre, video, music and writing. As a curator and advocate, he has been associated with various Vancouver arts organizations, including the Western Front, Centre A, and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Hank has been playing the piano and performing since childhood, most recently exploring a system of scales and fingering techniques that seeks to expand the piano’s range of expression.
