A 1995 study found this exercise places over 3,000 Newtons of force on the lower spine, which could cause herniated discs.

That's the same as 674.43 pounds of force on your lower back (ouch!).

Or to put it another way, it's like taking a punch from a pro boxer that has been found to be able to generate 3000-5000 newtons of force.

I sure don't want a pro-boxer punching me in the lower back, but that's essentially what we're doing when we perform this exercise over and over.
