The Barbell Squat gets a bad rap in the gym, but are they really a dangerous exercise?

There are a lot of people who hate squats with a passion and blame this exercise for back injuries, knee injuries, etc. And while there certainly is a risk of injury from any exercise you do, the squat isn't nearly as bad as many people make it out to be.

Top level powerlifters and Olympic weight lifters will build up to squatting in excess of double their body weight with a full range of motion (i.e. ass to the grass). And studies have shown that these athletes have stronger and more stable knee joints compared to people who don't squat.
