When it comes to building muscle there is a correlation between size and strength. Generally speaking a BIGGER Muscle is also a STRONGER Muscle.

Now this doesn't necessarily mean that the biggest guy in the gym will always be the strongest. There are other factors of strength that come into play such as tendon and ligament strength, flexibility, mobility, lifting technique, etc.

But for the most part as you get bigger - you'll also get stronger (and vice versa).

So this brings up the question of how do you know when you should increase the weight you are lifting in the gym? (i.e. getting stronger)
