Hi Friend,
Welcome to my October Newsletter.
We all have studios of some kind in our homes these days, which means we all mix music at one time or another. The next generation of plugins have now begun to surface, and hopefully that will help you mix better than ever. |

What Are The Next Gen Plugins? 1. They'll do the thinking for you. So much of mixing is intuitive and comes from experience, but the next generation of plugins on many levels eliminates the need to listen, at least what you may be lead to believe.
2. They're designed to make mixing easier. And maybe they will if they can perform many of the tasks that we now have to use our ears for. Like what, you may ask? How about EQing, level control and environment comparison for starters.
3. Some examples. The big one is iZotope Neutron, which analyzes each track and suggests EQ settings, but then goes another step by analyzing other tracks in the mix as well to find frequencies that are being masked, a job that can take a mixer a long time to get the hang of by ear.
Another is Soundways Low Leveler that looks at the bass region of a mix to determine how it will translate in different environments. Again, this is something that is a matter of time and experience for most good mixers.
Yet another is Audified Mix Checker that simulates different environments so you don't have to run to your car or get your boombox.

But There's Pushback 4. To many veteran engineers, it's cheating. If you spend most of your life learning how to mix solely with your ears, it's pretty threatening when a plugin promises to do the same job for someone who's just started.
5. Isn't this an overreaction? In reality, it is, since none of these plugin companies suggest that their software is anything more than a starting place that will help you get to the end of a mix faster.
6. There's still no replacement for talent and experience. In the end, a good engineer is going to make these new plugs sing while an inexperienced one will still struggle with the sound.

| The Bottom Line
It's a very exciting time to be a musician, audio engineer, or producer. The tools are amazing and getting better every day. There's more to choose from than ever, but that also means that we can't let ourselves become too reliant on the technology. History has shown that never works out!
If you've read through to the end, you now know a little more about our Music 4.0 world than the majority of people in the music business today. Aren't you glad you subscribed to my list? |
