Subject: February Newsletter - You may be using a new DAW soon

Hi Friend,

Welcome to my February Newsletter.

You might not realize it, but there's a quiet revolution going on in the world of digital audio workstations, and it could mean that you'll be using something brand new soon.

The Revolution Is On
1. Pro Tools is losing its grip. There are have many defections from the platform, especially on the music side of things. The biggest reason is the subscription model that makes you pay every year for the privilege of using PT, but many cite weak innovation and poor customer service as well.

2. The bottom of the music market has already left. There are so many excellent (not to mention cheaper) alternatives that many young musicians, artists and producers are no longer shackled to the feeling that they need to use PT to be in the business. There's some great music being made on other platforms these days.

3. But post isn't going anywhere. Most PT alternatives are fine for music, but lack the capabilities required for post-production. That plus the huge installed base (some facilities have as many as 300 seats) means that this part of the market will stay in Avid's corner for quite a bit longer.

So What Are The Alternative DAWs?
4. Studio One. Whenever I ask magazine editors or people in the know about what's hot in the DAW world, Studio One is always at the top of the list. As a mixing tool, it still seems to have a way to go, but the revisions come fast with this platform so don't be surprised if that improves soon.

5. Cubase. This DAW has a huge installed base and each version gets better and better. I know of a music department at a very top gaming company that just changed to Cubase from PT and they couldn't be happier.

6. Logic Pro X. You certainly can't beat the price, and Apple is behind it. Logic has been the biggest serious competitor to PT for a long time, but many people don't like the learning curve coming from another DAW.

7. Reaper. This one is a real sleeper as it's cheap ($60!) and has more features than you'd expect for the price. It's routinely discounted by pros until they actually use it. It will take a lot for it to overtake PT, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

8. Something new in the works. Although both companies have denied being interested, both Universal Audio and Waves would have both the engineering and marketing talent, and installed base, to bring out a DAW that would take the world by storm under the right circumstances. We'll see, but don't hold your breath.
The Bottom Line
This is a very interesting time in the music business. Just about every musician, DJ or beat maker owns some sort of DAW, and the market is more splintered than it seems. Look for a big disruption to come, but it might be gradual instead of overnight.

If you've read through to the end, you now know a little more about our Music 4.0 world than the majority of people in the music business today. Aren't you glad you subscribed to my list?
