Extended Exhibitions

Alice Kettle, Towers, 2003, textile installation, 118 x 98 x 27.5 in. Belger Collection

Belger Arts Center is extending Towers: Alice Kettle and Joann Quiñones' exhibition La Gruta/The Grotto through Saturday, February 19. Don't miss your chance to see both of these powerful exhibitions.

Joann Quiñones, Dorotea, 2021, terracotta, silk roses, cowrie shells, paint, wood, 32 x 24 x 9 in. Photo credit: Destini Ross.

La Gruta/The Grotto: Joann Quiñones is based on the concept of the grotto, an artificial or natural cavern used for both sanctuary and devotion.  Rich in iconography and symbolism, La Gruta/The Grotto holds figurative sculptures, including “relics,” that explore the intricacies of race, class, gender, sexuality, and religion.  The work in the exhibition is an invitation to contemplate narratives of the domestic, family, and womanhood and how they are complicated by a history of slavery, stolen labor, and racism, particularly in the U.S. and the Caribbean.

Stay tuned to our website for more information about Joann's upcoming artist talk in February.

This is the final week to see Journeys at Belger Crane Yard Gallery. Journeys features the ceramic works of nine artists who were either born in China or are of Chinese descent. The exhibition explores themes of identity in a multicultural world, examining both the juxtapositions and intersections between Eastern and Western cultures. Duality and the vacillation between two worlds is present within each artist’s body of work as well as throughout the exhibition.
