Belger Crane Yard Gallery presents Schema: A Journey Through Traditional Patterns and Imagery featuring the work of ceramic artist Melanie Sherman. Sherman’s porcelain work is lavishly glazed, painted with elaborate patterning, and embellished with gold. Her lustrous surfaces combine traditional china paint techniques with modern imagery, elevating subjects as banal as underwear to a level of preciousness. Inspired by recent artistic residencies in Hungary and China, Schema reflects Sherman’s love of ornamentation and her fascination with 18th century European porcelain.

Artist Biography:
Melanie Sherman was born in Germany and currently resides and works in Kansas City, Missouri. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute. Her background is in graphic design, where she developed an eye for pattern and decoration. In her ceramics she combines her love for ornamentation and her fascination with the history of ceramics, referencing 18th century European porcelain.

Melanie has traveled to Asia and Europe to explore ancient and contemporary porcelain production of the East and the instilled taste for prestigious white and translucent table wares of the West. She has been a resident at the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemét, Hungary where she studied with the renowned Latvian artist Ilona Romule and deepened her love for designing with plaster and detailed china-painting. She was also a resident at The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China, where she developed her own designs with skilled local craftsman into a new body of work, exploring the relationship between the cultures, and how they continue to connect and influence each other through the ceramic arts.

The Belger Crane Yard Studios art complex is conveniently located between Belger Arts Center, in the Crossroads Arts District, and Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine Jazz District.  This four-building facility, constructed between 1908 and 1918, has become a destination for artists and art lovers. It houses the Belger Crane Yard Gallery, a contemporary art gallery; the Red Star Artist in Residence program; studios for ceramic artists; Asheer Akram Metalworks, a metal workshop; the Lawrence Lithography Workshop, a lithography gallery and workshop; The Random Lab ceramic studios; and Crane Yard Clay, a ceramic equipment and supply business. This exhibition takes place at Belger Crane Yard Gallery. Exhibitions are also scheduled at Belger Arts Center at 2100 Walnut Street.
