October First Friday

Eliza Au, Slot Bowl, 2019, porcelain, cone 10, 11 x 11 x 8 in.

Journeys opens this Friday, October 1, from 6 pm to 9 pm, with artists' remarks at 6:30 pm at the Belger Crane Yard Gallery (2011 Tracy Ave., KCMO 64108). Journeys features the ceramic works of nine artists born in China or who are of Chinese descent. The exhibition explores themes of identity in a multicultural world, examining both the juxtapositions and intersections between Eastern and Western cultures. The exhibition will be on view through January 8, 2022.

Joann Quiñones, These Hands Do Not Work Here (detail), 2020, terracotta, wood, whitewash, acrylic, ribbon, 125 x 19 x 6 in.

La Gruta/The Grotto: Joann Quiñones is based on the concept of the grotto, an artificial or natural cavern used for both sanctuary and devotion.  Rich in iconography and symbolism, La Gruta/The Grotto holds figurative sculptures, including “relics,” that explore the intricacies of race, class, gender, sexuality, and religion.  The work in the exhibition is an invitation to contemplate narratives of the domestic, family, and womanhood and how they are complicated by a history of slavery, stolen labor, and racism, particularly in the U.S. and the Caribbean. The exhibition is on view through February 5, 2022.

Alice Kettle, Towers, 2003, textile installation, 118 x 98 x 27.5 in.

Also on view through February 5, 2022, is a large-scale, textile triptych titled Towers by British artist Alice Kettle.  The artist created the work in response to the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.  After the work was first shown in the U.S. during a 2009 Surface Design Conference in Kansas City, the artist gifted Towers to the Belger Collection so that it would remain in the U.S.  We are honored to have received this special gift and to share it with visitors.   To learn more about Alice Kettle, please visit her website.
