A Discourse On Ego Death & Self-Resurrection — How To Graduate From A Spiritual Amoeba In Order To Become Who You Are... Without The Samsaric “You” Getting In The Way

Hey Friend,

The books that inspire or influence me the most are those that I will read over and over, each time with highlighter or colored pen in hand, ready to mark the pages with underlines, additional page reference numbers, and sometimes any thoughts that jump to mind while reading.

Some pages lack blank space entirely, the margins and the gutter and, yes, even the spaces between the lines will often end up holding notes, some of them never to be referenced again but simply locked in my memory upon writing them.

Timothy Donaghue’s book Black Magick: The Left Hand Path is one of those rare books worthy of reading over and over again, each time finding new kernels of wisdom that fall from the pages, or ideas that had seemed good the first few reads, but for whatever reason they finally click into place in a new way.

From Timothy himself in Black Magick:

The true philosophy of the Left Hand Path consists of three inviolable principles—the 3 Godlike Virtues—individuality, freedom, and power. Black magicians exhibit the 3GV in the irrepressible quest for supreme Godhood.

The catch is, though, that a person is not aware of even the existence of these 3GV until the opposite has been experienced and the experience has been gained. Also, much like “enlightenment” itself, this is not an experience that only occurs once, after which you are “enlightened” or “en-virtued.”

Like everything else, we get our hands around it, figure it out, label it, celebrate our mastery over it, and while the confetti and kazoos are being swept off of the floor, we’ve lost it again; we discover that we only rose to the surface of consciousness enough to suck some illuminating air into our astral lungs before sinking back into being unaware of our own bound state.

Godlike Virtue #1 - Freedom

Asking the question to the generous internet oracle, “What is freedom?” the persistent definitions that appear in nearly every dictionary rely upon defining the diverse and gradient forms of slavery, then placing “Freedom” as the standing opposite.

In order to even logically define “Freedom,” we must first understand its opposite: Slavery.
In order to actually know freedom, to understand it personally, an individual must experience its opposite, being enslaved in some degree or another.

The Dark Sorcerer will not abide, he will not make himself comfortable in his chains, but in searching he find that there is an alternative: Freedom.

He also finds that Freedom is a thing that must be taken for one’s own self, and through the might of that person’s body, the sharpness of their minds, and the vigilance of their hearts, they may have freedom… for a moment.

Try as he might, the Sorcerer will gain the revelation of even more oppressive, even more inescapable.

Ultimately, it must be conceded that Freedom is an ideal rather than a stable state that can be attained.

Indeed, one prominent definition defines “virtues” as: “Attitudes, dispositions, and world-views enabling the individual to be and to act in ways that develop this potential.”

Freedom, then, is the potential and is the ideal, and fixing such as an inviolable virtue within ourselves empowers us to pursue that ideal and to bring it into greater and greater manifestation in our reality!

Godlike Virtue #2 - Power

Early childhood abuse or neglect seems to be the black magician’s default biographical background, forced powerlessness seeming to be the rule while self-reliance within a supportive system and eventual self-empowerment have become the exception in those who are drawn to the Left Hand Path.

Black Magick does offer something that no one else dares: Power. Raw, limitless power, unrestrained, unfettered, the demons snapping at your heels to receive your command.

With Black Magick, I have done the impossible, I have materialized the supernatural, I have called down miracles and have cast forth curses that have leveled nations.

If we are to believe the test subjects themselves, most people who have been nourished with compassion, trust, and guidance by family, society, and peers claim to have no interest in such power.

I argue that they have no hunger for power, because they have been sated through a drip-line of “personal power” so consistently that they do not believe they have experienced true powerlessness.

It isn’t that these folk are more capable, more self-reliant, or even more sane than the rest of us. It’s just that they don’t know any better. They live their lives within the dictates of their slavers, and so they skate by without ever having to face the obvious truth that they are not free, and that they have no power.

Once the Sorcerer becomes aware of this suffocating truth, they will not rest until they have done something, because really, power is about doing something, when instead most can do nothing.

Black Magick is the jewel shining in the desert, the Black Pyramid of power that the hopeless, the forsaken, and the damned pilgrimage to, having known powerlessness as it presses down on our faces like soles of boots threatening to destroy us, but never actually stomping our skulls because the fear is the weapon.

Godlike Virtue #3 - Individuality

If all things do indeed flow forth from the Source, as the Enlightened Adepts insist, and if indeed all things are composed of the light and sound radiating from this Source in varying degrees of solidity, then the only battle that can be waged is a battle for our existence, not as amorphous holograms of a primordial orb unconscious of its own self save through contrast with others.

There is a higher and deeper level of self-awareness, of Individuality, that is attainable to man. Rather than knowing thyself as “not like” others, and rather than seeing oneself as an object or thing that is separate and different from other objects and things, the path to knowing thyself is found in losing thyself.

Ego Death is the key to self-awareness.

The person that is synced with your body, the person who showers and shaves, who has preferences and dislikes, the person who believes some things and dismisses most everything else, the person that you think you are is a sham.

I mean, it’s not a lie - you really do exist… in the same way that a sofa or hatstand exist. But it is a sham.

Who you think you are has nothing to do with who “you” really are at any core level. If you were stripped of your meat-body, a good deal of your likes and distastes, your preferences, even your autonomic response that pushes you away from pain and toward pleasure would cease.

Relationships? Family? Friends?? Irrelevant to a non-breeding non-lifeform.

Social engineering, academic memorizations, beliefs founded on minimal evidence, and behavioral patterns running so deep and so far back into your history that you have assumed you were born the way that you are.

Ego Death is the key to self-awareness.

To discover freedom, we have to know slavery. To understand power, we must have faced powerlessness.

To understand the self, to grasp Individuality in its most glorious being, we must become no one, we must obliterate the self.

Luckily, we are immersed into a perfect practical system to do just that.

Psychodrama, ritual magick, psychonautical descents into entheogenic release, tantra, certain forms of meditation, and nearly all magickal pathworkings drive towards the dissolution of boundaries. Pushed hard enough, or perhaps it is better phrased, “released fully enough,” the final boundary dissolves, and that is the boundary between the self and the Self.

The Darkest Night of the Soul is found when we no longer know who we are, what we are, what our purpose is, or even if we exist at all.

Our samsaric identity (false ego generated and maintained by physical, mental, and emotional processes) has become obsolete in the moment that the boundary between the “I” and everything else that exists, falls away.

While normally this would occur shortly after the death of the physical body, it can and should be stimulated regularly through magickal practices, shamanic journeys, near-death-experiences, soul travel transcendence, and through intentionally resetting every detail of your life.

Your truest self, which has been called Atman, has no form, nor gender, nor age, nor background. You were never born, and you can never die. You cannot be defined, yet you are a Self more solid and more sure than any bipedal primate who thinks he is thinking but is only dreaming a simulated version of himself and his reality.

It is time to wake up.

Unfortunately, there is a black abyss to cross between dream-simulation and consciously subjective reality. In the moment of the crisis of Ego Death, when all that you have assumed that you are is experienced to be and known to be a sham, in that moment you are nothing. You have become the spiritual equivelant of an amoeba. You have become a psychic single celled organism incapable of even hoping to someday be imbued with a sense of purpose in your existence.

It is from this nothingness of self that you must rise, finding the black point in the center of your being, the Black Sun Within, which is infinitely small. It is that Black Spark that rises, wrapping sinew to bone, breathing life and fire and spirit into yourself from your Self, creating a new self in place of the obsolete one.

There are no instructions on how to do this. In the crucial moment, you will either be capable of self-resurrection, or you will not. Most people do not rise from the pile of ashes and shadows. Most revert, pervert, or convert.

The greatest aid that you can have is experience, and specifically experience “being” outside of your body, disconnected from your physical, mental, and emotional naggings. This is perhaps the single greatest practical application of Soul Travel.

Once your feet are upon the path of Ascent, though, you don’t need to worry about how to find your Ego Death… it will surely find you when it is time.
