Hey Friend,
Divination has been a part of human history from the very start. People have always wanted to know, what lies in wait for them on their path through life. Many forms of divining have been accessed throughout the world, scrying, runes, chiromancy, pendulums, etc. Though out of all the forms available, the tarot deck has been the most influential and chosen. Tarot as we know it today, was first introduced as a French card game. It wasn’t utilized as a tool of prophecy until the late 1700’s, though some have accredited the cards the history of being connected to ancient Egypt and even to ancient Hebrew occultism tracing it back to the 14th century.
The traditional tarot deck consists of 78 cards, divided into two main parts; the minor arcana, and the major arcana. Within the minor arcana are four suits (wands, pentacles, swords and cups), each concentrating on different aspects of the querent’s (the one asking the questions) life. As an example, wands concentrate on the physical realm, while the swords reflect the mental state. Each suit consists of 14 cards each. Then there is the major arcana which are sometimes considered more powerful or influential to the querent, which consist of 22 cards.

As each card holds a special meaning and significance, so does the positioning and spread they are laid onto/into. There are many different tarot spreads, some very elaborate and some simple, it truly depends on what is being asked and how in depth of a reading one desires. The core spread that is mainly utilized is known commonly as the Celtic Cross Spread. This is a great spread as it covers ones past and how they got to where they are, but also looks into their current situation and then a bit into what is to come. This is an invaluable tool to the magician, the ability to foresee the inner workings of a given situation and possible outcomes to be, is truly the essence of magic. Though that spread is rather complete, I have added two positions and created my own spread known as ‘Semita Pondera Chaosium’ (Path of Balanced Chaos). And that’s the beauty of the tarot and the underlying system it functions on, it can be customized to the individual. In fact, as magic itself, it should be made personal by the magician to achieve full effectiveness.

As when performing magic regularly, working with the tarot helps elevate the physic abilities of the magician.
