Several months ago, after wrapping up work for the day, I took advantage of the beautiful, sunny day by going for a hike in the desert. I loaded up a backpack with supplies, put my dog on her leash, and headed out into the wilderness.
Before I had gone very far on my trek, I received a text message concerning a financial investment. Something unexpected had occurred, resulting in a financial loss rather than a gain. I kept walking, my mind weighed down by the bad news, and no matter how hard I tried I just couldn’t get it off of my mind.
To be honest, the financial loss didn’t bother me as much as the fact that it bothered me was bothering me! I can handle losing a bit of money on investments here and there… but I wasn’t going to tolerate bad news spoiling a perfectly gorgeous day out in the desert with my four-legged best friend.

Of course, at this point in my life, I know that magick can and should be applied to any problem successfully.
I rummaged through my backpack to find some paper that I could use for a sigil, or maybe a candle that I could use, but I hadn’t packed a ritual bag, I had packed a hiking bag with water, a flashlight, matches, a handkerchief, the usual stuff you’d need for desert exploring.
Then I remembered the runes.
I grabbed a flat, oval stone that was right below me on the ground, and found a harder, sharper stone right next to it. Using the sharp edge of the harder stone, I scratched the Fehu rune into the oval rock until I was sure that it wouldn’t be easily worn away. I then gave myself a small cut on my finger, and used my blood to color the rune, and held the stone to my lips, my mind focused on a positive resolution to the immediate financial situation.
“Fehuuuu” I whispered on the stone, and I could almost feel it vibrating a little bit in my hand, so I repeated the rune sound louder, drawing it out longer, “Feeeehhhhuuuuu!” The rune was coming to life in my hand, like some ancient entity incarnating into this world through the sound of its name. I repeated the galdr until I could feel its powers lock into place, until I was peacefully certain that the desired change had been imprinted upon reality.
I buried the stone right there, and continued on my hike, my mind no longer burdened, and I wandered through the desert with my dog at my side for a few hours.

While walking back to civilization, as soon as my phone re-entered service range, it lit up with dings and alerts. I had received multiple text messages concerning the same financial situation that had only hours before threatened to ruin my day.
Only moments after burying the rune that I had made, my advisor had discovered some overlooked piece of information that overturned the outcome, resulting in not only a gain rather than a loss, but yielding a much higher gain than we had anticipated.
This is just one of countless experiences that I’ve had with the runes. Each rune is a spell on its own, and can be combined with other runes to create a new spell entirely, literally offering an incalculable amount of spells that you can cast without ritual, without ceremony, as I go about my daily life.
