Editor's Note: This newsletter features part two of a transcription from a video chat between Bill and E.A. I have allowed his natural, conversational phraseology to remain in place.

E.A.: ...for people like me, who are scared of astrology and are scared of getting into the details of it — because honestly, it seems overwhelming. It seems like it's too much work. And your grimoire does make it accessible, and at the same time, like you said, it points to a lot of other magick that can continue your research.

One of the things that was really fun that you do was where you did some simply charts for Abraham Lincoln, Austin Osman Spare, Princess Diana. First off, what was the inspiration? That spark that went off on you, that said, "I oughta do this." Because it is a really fun almost whimsical way of approaching the application of this.

Bill: It was. And the hardest part was figuring out who I was going to have the charts of. On one hand, I wanted people to have examples of charts in front of them, so as they're working through the material they've got something to refer to.

On the other hand, the question became, "Well, who am I going to use?" And certain people jumped out. You know, I wasn't going to use overplayed occult people, like Crowley. I wanted to keep it very specific with Rosaleen Norton, A.O. Spare. Abraham Lincoln, you know, to me, he's pretty generic, but what I mean by that is most people know him, they know his pros and cons, so you don't have to feel like you have to read a bibliography to get him.

E.A.: Yeah, right, that's awesome.

Bill: And here's something that's not in the book, and I'm glad we're doing this because I use an example chart in there, and the name on the chart is, "Bob." And I put that in there for all of all the Discordians for the Church of the SubGenius. Hail Bob!

E.A.: I love it. You were talking about, with such an intense subject, and Kenneth Grant was very clear to point out how intense of a subject this is. He made no qualms about it. This is not for looky-loos. This is for serious sorcerers.

Now, you still managed to take that and add a bit of levity to it, where you ... Even in your writing style, we have ... The phrasing you'll use, you know? You'll start up a paragraph by saying, "Okay! Let's go. Let's jump into this." And I love that. Do you feel like that's ... I would imagine that's not just in your writing, but that's probably something you've adopted just in order to handle this heavy material and make it a positive experience.

Bill: Yeah. And part of it — to toot my own horn — part of it is from my 14 years of teaching. You've got to interact. The hardest part was translating that from an in-person class to the written page. And for many years, I had problems with different publishers because I got mixed reactions.

One of them would say, "Well, the way you talk should not be the way you write." And then, the other camp, of course, was, "Well, if this is your style, let's play to your strengths." You know? A book has to be engaging. When you're reading something, you have to be able to say, "Okay. I'm enjoying this. Oo! And now it's interactive fun-time." And so, you jump into the exercises, or you feel like you are going on a journey with the author.

E.A.: Absolutely. What you're doing is you're pacing it. And so, as I'm reading, you'll go through the philosophy, the background. And I'm reading, going, "Okay, okay. I get this." And then the way that you pace it into the next movement, into the actual application. "Okay, so let's put this into practice." Even the way you phrase it, just one author to another, it is spectacular to watch your writing process and learn from it. Because you really do use cool methods of capturing the reader and making it much more than only a book of facts. There's something that you can relate to in it.

Bill: Well, that you for that, and that is the hardest part. And part of the reason I write this way is because I spent way too many late nights reading thick, theosophical material from the 19th century, and even some of Crowley's verbosity, and what you find in occultism pre-20th century. I spent way too many hours reading that and going, "You know, just flipping shoot me now because I feel like I'm going to yank my eyes out. We're going to go Saw here without any compunction whatsoever."

And I wanted to avoid that because it's too easy to get in that drone mindset when you're reading something. And for astrology in particular, it's already dry.

E.A.: Yeah. I know. Absolutely. And that is, once again, why I particularly love this book is it does take something that I otherwise would not have read about and have learned if it weren't written in the way it was written, presented in the way it's presented, and just so engaging.

So, thanks for writing this book. It is awesome. It is well-needed. Like you said, it is a good one-stop, you can go there, get the basics, get some really good looks at the application of the actual ritual and black magic application of these things. And then, if you'd like to, you can follow these pathways and follow the information to the ... Let's say, Kenneth Gran has been pointed to throughout this conversation because ... If you don't know why, go check out Kenneth Grant.

Bill: Exactly. And I wrote it in such a way that if you already know astrology, you can skip that section of the book. You know? If you don't know astrology, well, here it is in one section for you to return to, but it's written very modular where, "Okay, you need a primer in astrology? Here you go. Astrology in 20,000 words or less. You need a primer on the Qliphoth? Here you go. If you know those two things, then go straight to the system in part three."

I wanted to set it up like that to make it more versatile so that people weren't intimidated by the amount of material.

E.A.: Absolutely. Yeah. And you nailed it. I mean, as far as I'm concerned, I haven't seen anything in this book to complain about, and I complain about a lot of things in occult books, in writing, and in astrology. So, you passed my litmus test, for sure, my friend.

Well, thank you for that, and I'm hoping that the astrology community sees it as the gift that it is for them, because for the astrology community, it's an introduction to the reintegration of astrology and occultism. You know, they've been together for centuries, but in the last 100 years, they've been divorced from each other. This is my contribution to bringing it all together just like they started.

Right, yeah. And I know any Left Hand Path astrologers out there are going to absolutely love this. One thing I did want to ask you about real quick, and this is something that I've had a client bring up to me as a major concern for her, is the influence of asteroids in astrological readings. What do you see with that? Is that something ... And that me a bit advanced astrology, but is that something we can be concerned about?

Bill: So, in the book, I think I mention the asteroids, but I don't use them. I don't put them in there. For those of you that are not familiar with asteroids, basically, they're fast-moving so you can add them into your chart, and they do provide a lot of depth and detail. But if you're just starting astrology, there's no reason to add them in. You've got enough on your plate with the signs, planets, houses, and aspects. Why the hell would you want to do that to yourself?

I mean, I'm a partial-masochist and I wouldn't even do that. But the way that it got explained to me many years ago, and I think it's accurate is, if you apply asteroids to your readings then that explains why you prefer brunettes to blondes. That explains why you maybe an ass person or a face person. You know? That's the level of details that they bring out.

And there's nothing wrong with that because they can provide a lot of clarity. And asteroids are a very major part of forensic astrology, using astrology to solve crimes. So, there's a lot of value in using them, but when you're starting off, leave them out but if you want to add them later, add them later because they are worth it, but you just don't want to overwhelm yourself.

E.A.: So, it sounds like the asteroids are actually, since they are passing and they're in fast-motion, these are like moods that will pop up, an attitude that will come into play. Or, like a crime, something that has a spark and then it's gone.

Bill: Yeah, exactly. And another way to look at it is we had a running joke here in St. Louis for a long time. If we had six people signed up for a class and four of them canceled during the course of a day and all of them canceled because they had car problems, well then our running joke was, "Oh, it's the car asteroid."

So, that's the other way they can manifest is little blips on the radar and you go, "Wow. That's a coincidence."

E.A.: They would only seem to inform you, maybe, after the fact rather than prior to, whereas if you kind of leave them out — if you're trying to target things, then it's actually probably better to not pay attention to the asteroid because that's going to kind of lead how you target them.

Bill: Exactly. And a pet peeve of mine is that a lot of people find the Lilith Asteroid or Black Moon Lilith because they're interested in Lilith and eventually it leads it to them. So then they turn around and ask me about it, and my first question is, "How well do you know astrology?"

And most of these people don't know astrology very well, so then my response is, "Well, it's not even worth your time." The problem is then people think I'm trying to say, "Oh, there's nothing of value here." Well, no. You've got to have all the basics down of astrology before you get into that. I love the material with Lilith, but you better be a competent astrologer before you start working with it magickally. Because number one, it's asteroid based, it's minor detail based. And number two, it's frigging Lilith!

E.A.: That is the thing — at the end of the day, those of us who have delved into this with everything that we have and plunged into the depths, we know that magick is real. This isn't just playing with our heads, this is actually invoking forces, and those forces at times can squash you. So, be careful.
