One of the primary principles that we tap into with magick is the fact that we exist within a multi-layered reality, and that we are actually only interacting with the most gross, tangible, and substantial parts of that reality. By substantial, I don’t necessarily mean important or meaningful. I’m simply referring to the things that your five senses can interact with. However, the true magician knows, as more and more people are finding out, that this is not all there is. You are not your body, and your reality is not this world. So, what is reality?

We can use definitions such as astral plane, causal reality, and so on, but these are all really just for our own categorization, because there’s no real start and stop. There’s no actual border between the physical and the astral. Not only that, but they overlap increasingly, more and more as time goes on. At the end of the day, what we’re left with is a gradient between all the worlds. I’m sure I’m not telling you anything new here, but what this means is extremely important.

If you want to tune in to what’s happening on the magickal plane, to be able to see spirits, receive messages from the other side, and pierce your way into that world to make effects in the energy, the mind, and the organization of this one, even before these things manifest in the realm of the senses, you’re going to need to take your attention and pull it away from the physical world. You’ll need to pay just a bit more attention to the subtle things, the things that you can feel, that you somehow know, but you aren’t sure how or why. I’d like to give you a mundane example of this.

There is a tangible texture that occurs inside of every conversation. When you’re speaking to someone in the same room, you can feel a buzz from the energy of what they’re saying. You can look into their eyes, you can feel them, you can even smell the essence of their pheromones in the air. As you can see, there are multiple levels at play here. There are a million different things that all of the senses are working together to fulfill. The deepest level of this unspoken conversation is that you can often tell that a person is not saying what they really mean. However, through opening up to all levels of the conversation, you can receive what they are actually conveying. This is especially difficult when people are lying to you, as you can feel the truth and the gravity of the lie. More than this, however, you can feel and understand why they’re telling the lie. I’d like you to apply this same subtlety to your magickal practice, right here and now.

The way to bring this into practice is, first, by becoming aware that you are not your mind. You are not your mind. You are not your body. You are not your emotions, your habits, your family, your possessions, your reputation, your spirituality, not even your spirit or your soul. What you are at the core is The Observer of all these things and many, many more. At the heart of it all, you are The Observer of all things. When you realize this, accept it, and embrace it, you will learn that by paying attention to the things that you ask to manifest in your life, they will begin to grow.

Be aware, however, that the ability to pay attention is not a faculty of the mind. We can use the mind to both sharpen and dull our ability to actually pay attention to the things around us. This is easily proven by the fact that the thing which pays attention can step back and pay attention to the mind, or, conversely, can stop paying attention to the mind and focus on the emotions, the body, or the subtle spiritual activities around it.

If all you’re paying attention to is this world, and all you’re investing your attention in are the five senses, it goes without saying that you’re never going to witness that which lies beyond, as the mundane cannot perceive that which is eternal. That which sees, hears, and experiences is the Observer, the very same thing which pays attention. Just start to pay attention to those subtle things, to the things that you feel deeply. Pay attention to the magnetic tingle that you feel when you start to even think of your favorite spirit. Pay attention to how your emotions are pulling you, how your thoughts either guide or interfere with you, and that the focus of your attention is going to start to grow all around you.

This is how we grow an empire, by placing our attention on the things that are truly meaningful to us. As you pay attention to these subtle things, the things that allow us to fully and completely enjoy life, the subtle things will become the obvious things. Once you can do this, you will have flipped the balance of the mundane and the magickal, and that is how one lives a truly magickal life.
