Working with the hidden wisdom gathered through Necromancy and the connections with the dead can be a difficult task, especially because the facts provided by history are often vague and based in the realm of myths and legends. As its principal element, this book attempts to cover the diverse traditions of all the current approaches and researchers contributing to the topic of Necromancy, while also providing a brief introduction to the subject, and setting a possible framework as to where the practice may have originated. The main source of information in the analysis has been anchored in the written documents of antiquity, which could also serve as the foundational stone in the search for the origins of Necromancy to provide at least some form of certainty.

As we go further back in history, the lack of written evidence and the increased stress on material goods is a fertile ground for speculations and unproved theories that are accepted by some and disregarded by others. Here, we might theorize whether the practices of the oldest periods of human history might really have been connected to Necromancy. Before we go any further into explaining why humans felt the need to turn themselves to the afterlife in the search for answers, we will have to build a framework on what can be understood by the term Necromancy. In general, the term Necromancy covers all the divination practices connected with the Spirits of the Dead.

Necromancy is the art of predicting the future through enchantments (prestiges or demonic dreams). It is, therefore, characteristic of Sorcerers and Pythonesses. They use the dead or non-divine demons. Necromancers are opposed to fortune-tellers, who presage through divine entities. The term Necromancer was often synonymous with Wizard or Sorcerer since the thirteenth century, but Necromancy—as the word itself indicates—was based exclusively on the dead. As such, Necromancy (along with Black Magick) included all kinds of non-divine entities, the deceased included.

Historically, Necromancy is a branch of Black Magick based on the use of the dead, either with their phsical remains or by the invocation of their spirits, for divination and obtaining hidden knowledge. Sometimes, direct contact with their bodies and possession was required. Necromancy is an ancient practice common to the mystical or supernatural traditions of various cultures worldwide, including Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Persian, etc. It is still practiced today, where it seeks to answer questions through the intervention of spirits. The word Necromancy is also used in a more general sense to refer directly to Black Magick and Witchcraft.

Etymologically, Necromancy is an adaptation of the term necromantia of late Latin, taken in turn from nekromanthism, a word from the Greek post-classical era and composed of the Greek terms nekrós "dead body," and manteía "prophecy and divination."

The Death manifestation has become very popular in many of the different magickal currents within the Left-Hand Path, representing the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one without the mortal flesh. This represents an important phase of transition in the existence of the Adept, who know part of the mysteries surrounding death as a powerful supernatural force. This force has many symbols and methods of working in different cultures through their magickal developments.

In this book, Gateways of Necromancy, we will explore the diverse archetypes, symbols with their respective rituals, invocations, methods of divination, evocations, and sacred plants of the dead. Death has been symbolized through myriad spirits and even demons through many cultures. For exmaple, we can also explore the Egyptian god Seeker or Anubis, known as the Lord of the Necropolis. According to what is stated in Egyptian mythology, he is the son of Seth and Nephthys. Anubis's primary mission was to guide the spirits of the dead to the other world or the Duat. Furthermore, we explore the Greek Thanatos. In Greek mythology, Thanatos is considered a dark and chilling figure, the God of Death without violence and the son of Nix, the Goddess of Night. His twin brother Hypnos is the God of Sleep, who sometimes slightly mimicked the powers of Thanatos. Also, we have the Hindu Kali, who is the Goddess of Death and destruction and the Goddess of Rebirth and Liberation. She is a terrible and sanguinary goddess and also the mother-woman giving new life at the expense of their sacrifice. Mother Kali is the most misunderstood of the goddesses of the Hindu pantheon.

Also, we have experience working with numerous demons and spirits connected with the Current of Death, such as Azrael, Euronymous, Hekate, Hel, San La Muerte, Qayin, Baron Samedi, and Saturn. The material shared here is practical because we want to give clues to the Adepts interested in exploring the many spirits of death, connecting with them, and building their own altars.
