• The altar itself is representative of the element of earth.

• The candles are representative of the element of fire.

• The incense, whether you’re using a censer with hot coals and dropping incense in it, or if you're using sticks of incense, either way, those represent the element of air.

• The element of water is represented with a chalice or a cauldron.

We thus have fire, water, earth, and air, all represented with our most basic ritual tools.

Another tool that I always have and that I've been using ever since I started my practice of witchcraft is a dagger or an athame. What this does is it acts as an extension of your own hand, of your own body, of your own energy.

With these basic tools, you're ready to perform any and all forms of black magick. This is really all that you need.

What do you need for your altar?

Really all you need is a flat space where you can perform your rituals, a flat surface where you can place your candles, where you can place your chalice and your incense.

I prefer most of all to use wood because it is a living thing and because wood is able to absorb and hold any energy that is placed into it so that the altar itself acts as a bit of a magnet and a battery, attracting energy to it and holding it inside of it, storing it there until you are ready to do your ritual.

I recommend on your altar having a space in the center that you can move your ritual objects towards, that you can set your sigils on top of that, or whatever your ritual focus is. You can even place your candles on top of there as you're doing your rituals, and that centers the focus of your ritual onto the center of that altar.

Now, you can use a dresser, a bedside table, or any other wooden object that you have that you can lay flat and place things on… but, I do recommend setting that aside for only ritual practice.

A simple flat slab of wood has worked really well for me because I can pick it up and move it. I can move it to another table. I can move it around the house. I can take it outside if I need to.

So I might encourage you, if you are trying to figure out what kind of altar to use, to just get a piece of flat wood. You can stain it whatever color that you want. You can decorate it however you want, but then you can use it, put it away. If you want to keep your practice hidden, you can put it in a closet. You can put it underneath your sofa. You can slide it wherever you want to slide it and store it away so that way it's out of sight, and then you can pull it back out whenever you want to do ritual.

Just having these items though, this isn't enough because these are just items. These are just objects.

We're not working on magick in the objective world. We're working on magick in the subjective world.

We're not working on magick in the world of matter. We're working it in the supernatural realm.

We need to subjectively create a supernatural synthesis of these materials, bringing them to life. This is called consecration.

But, how do you do this?

First, connect with the element of each tool. I like to begin by connecting with the fire of the candles. Pointing your athame at the candle flame, feel the element of fire, not the heat of the flame but the energy behind the heat. Imagine what the element of fire, unrestrained and in its full glory, might feel like.

Once you're connected to the elemental energy, it is important with all magick that you actually speak your desire. Every word that you speak is a spell, and so you can harness this power in your rituals just by speaking aloud what it is you desire.

Say to the flame:

Again using the athame as the extension of your power, you can either hold it over your chalice or your cauldron, or you can actually dip it into the liquid, into the water, wine, or whatever you have in your chalice.

Say to the cauldron:

To the incense, say:

For the consecration of the altar, rather than simply pointing at it or touching it with the dagger, I suggest that you make full contact with your altar by placing both of your hands upon your altar, anywhere that you feel drawn to, and actually feel just like you did with the fire, feel the energy of that altar beneath your hands. Feel the stability and the solidity of the element of earth beneath you.

Say to your altar:

Bring your attention to the entire altar and everything on it, and pronounce the final words of the consecration:

Now, one thing that you need to understand about your altar is that this is the microcosmic representation of your life, of your entire world. What this means is that everything that happens on the altar is going to happen in your life. So be careful about not placing random things on your altar, not using it as a place to set your phone or to set your keys, but only placing things on this altar that you want to manifest in greater form in your life.
