Greetings Friend, it's Bill Duvendack.

In the upcoming eighth volume in the Nine Demonic Gatekeepers, I and a host of other authors discuss Asmodeus. Generally, he is seen as a fire spirit associated with anger and lust, among other things. But, historically there is another part to his character, which is what I will focus on in my grimoire, titled “Asmodeus, Lord of the Jinn.” Yes, historically he is known as the Jinn lord, and that lesser-known aspect of his character is what I will be extrapolating on in that tome.

This association comes from Islam, but more specifically, the Arabian Peninsula, and is generally considered to predate the creation and spread of the Abrahamic belief systems through the area. Remember that before the Semitic people traveled and settled in that area of the world, they were migrant workers in Egypt. It is during that time that there was a well-established pagan culture inhabiting this area, and part of the beliefs and beings in that area gave rise to the Jinn, and thus to their leader, Asmodeus. Tragically, almost no information survives about these indigenous people and their beliefs, as the infection of Judaism was so thorough. This has presented a dilemma to modern occultists as well as scholars that study that time period and those lands.

However, the Jinn are known to have been around before the rise of Abraham and his followers, and the belief in them were so pervasive that it could not be wiped out. Over time, this of course also led to the incorporation of Asmodeus. Well, incorporation, if we believe he was not there before! Really, there is a lot of speculation due to the lack of evidence, but we do know something unrelated for sure.

While the release of the Compendium occurs August 25, there is something you can do to begin preparing for its arrival, and that is to read “The Arabian Nights.” This may seem strange, but while researching my article, I found many sources, and most of them unrelated, claiming that book as an authority on the behavior of the Jinn. The references I mention here were not “fanboy” references, but rather by scholars and historians, some of which live in and work in that part of the world, so they would know better than anyone else. The behavior and characterization of the Jinn are true to traditional stories passed down through the centuries, and by doing a character study of them, we come to know a side of the character of Asmodeus that most modern occultists do not work with, let alone know. By reading these stories before the release of the Compendium, you put yourself in a position to fully absorb his character in a deeper way than those that skip this almost mandatory pre-requisite work.

By learning about the dark trickster aspect of Asmodeus, you learn how to work with him in uncommon ways, and avoid doing what all others are doing. Additionally, this will open up new levels of understanding pertaining to his character that you will get from reading about him in the essays of the other contributing authors. While they may be focused on his more traditional roles and characteristics, knowing his dark jester nature can put a different and interesting spin on what you find there, enriching your understanding of him, and revealing more of his potency that is generally lost these days. Remember though, that once the Jinn’s bottle is opened, you can never again close it, so be prepared for the essence of Pandora that streams forth thanks to your curiosity. Released soon, this is the fitting second-to-last volume in the series. It promises to be a scorcher!
