Hey Friend,

As I conclude my year-long pathworking through Norse Magick, I am shifting gears and preparing for my return to the demonic, and the Nine Gatekeepers of the Infernal Empire call me back to their service.

I received this question on Facebook:

I was watching your seminar video on the Secrets of the Demonic Hierarchy. (Great imformation btw) I was curious as to why you circle the sigils? I know its common practice in Goetic and Ceremonial Magick(because it gives the practitioner power over) You just seem to have a greater respect for these entities. Similar to Demonolators. Is circling the sigils something that has worked for you? Or kind of a "must do"? Thank you for your time. And all the knowledge you share!

The Circle Centers Its Contents

I don’t always draw circles around sigils, but when I do it isn’t because I want to bind or constrain the spirit.

In fact, this isn’t really why circles are used around sigils.

Some demonolaters even state that the circle represents Lucifer, as His Light surrounds and impales all things, and all spirits are under His dominion.

The way that I see it, the Circle - whether it is drawn around the magician or around the sigil - represents all of existence. Everything within the circle, then, is “centered” in existence.

This symbolically and even magickally centers its contents in reality, making the magician, the ritual, or the sigil the primary force within your existence in that moment.

So, the circle around the sigil doesn’t bind the spirit any more than sitting within the Universal Circle would bind you. What it is actually doing is making the sigil, the spirit, and the magician the center of existence!

You can see how this is a powerful symbol to use in ritual!

Follow Your Intuition

But, like I said, I don’t always circle sigils. What do I look for to make this call?

If the sigil appears circled in most grimoires, most of the time I will draw a circle around the sigil that I’m using. If the sigil does not normally utilize a circle, it is usually found in a system that is a bit different from European grimoiric magick, and so I normally won’t add a circle to it.

Honestly, a good deal of the time I’ll simply rely on my intuition to guide me. This is really the best part about being a real Black Magician: as soon as I start preparations for the ritual, the spirits involved begin speaking to me through my intuition. It seems that these spirits are aware of the evocation before it even happens, and they tend to guide it towards a successful conclusion.

What is necessary for the magician, then, is to listen to your own intuition, listen to the magnetic pull or push that you’ll feel, and trust it just enough to follow it.

The best part is that since this is your magick, you’ll never be wrong as long as you are being true to what you are receiving!
