Hello Friend, it's Bill Duvendack.

Often times, the lands known as Sumer in ancient times have been called the cradle of the world, or the cradle of civilization, because the oldest traces of urban centers have been found here. This doesn’t mean it is truly the oldest area, because we don’t know what was around before the most recent Ice Age, but in modern times, this is where cities began. It stands to reason then, that the darkest, most primitive forms of magick also took root here and then, shaping all that we know of today in the urban world.

In previous anthologies, I have extensively written about the Canaanite side of the equation, and have shown how much of the Left Hand Path comes to us from that paradigm, but in the Ba’al anthology soon to be released by Become a Living God, I shift focus to Sumer. In a lot of ways, you can’t discuss one without another, and this is one of the reasons for the shift of attention. Another reason though, is that if you truly want to get to the black heart of the matter about Ba’al, you should discuss and study Sumer.

The ancient world didn’t happen in a vacuum though, and various areas and regions overlapped, which was true in the case of Ba’al. The title Ba’al was used in one area, but in another, it was Bel, and eventually, both really became the god Marduk. This is what I will discuss in my essay, “Ba’al, Bel, and Marduk.” Archaeology, history, and science teach us there is a strong, undeniable connection between the three, but most interestingly is the fact that its influence still exists to this day. Even though that time period is long dead, pieces of it shamble on to the present, and assist with the Canaanites in forming the horde that is the bulk of Left Hand Path teachings.

In that essay, I not only discuss all three points individually, I also discuss how they are tied together, and how to work with them to increase your own magical potency. I will let you in on a little secret here though, which is that the linchpin is Marduk, and because of that, he will be a primary focus for the essay. Remember that Ba’al is a title, so hence Ba’al Marduk is the appropriate way to address him. I could go further into that here, but why? I would rather you read the article to find out more. It is this line of thought I go into great depth and detail about in the piece, and as much as I hint at it here, there is so much more I leave unspoken, including some ritual work.

Enjoy this next installment of the Nine Demonic Gatekeepers series from Become a Living God, and as we near the end of it, know that more emphasis will be on wrapping things up and bringing things to conclusion, but we all know that just sets the stage for what you do with it from here.
