It was a deep thought process, because although I feel like I’ve got a lot that I can bring to leadership and working with people for common solutions, but I can’t lead anyone anywhere if I wouldn’t follow myself. I had to figure out what that person looked like. The first core principle of magick really is that you’ve got to see it to bring it about, so I had to see the vision of that person.

The first insight I gleaned from this was that this future version of myself, if I were to remove all obstacles and give full effort into becoming the best version of myself, would be a being who can be completely trusted because he does not lie. That’s quite the standard to live by. As I began to notice this and live with the idea percolating inside of me, I started noticing the little lies I’d tell here and there. Instead of looking around and seeing what person, place, or situation I could blame things on, I realized I could employ all sorts of little ways to become more honest, to not tell lies. On a strictly magickal level, if you don’t lie, then the words you speak are always true. Therefore, if you give a magickal command and you speak those words, your mind, heart, and energy are going to be in alignment to make your will manifest. This is one thing I really grabbed onto to motivate me to reach a place of pure honesty.

As you might imagine, being totally honest all the time makes it a little difficult to live life in society, always throwing your honest thoughts at everyone with no filter. In working with Satan, one of the things he told me was “It’s great that you have this ethic and don’t want to tell lies. What if you could also become someone who is completely trustworthy because you know how to keep a secret?” There seems to be a divergence between these two ideas, keeping secrets and being honest, but it’s really a matter of context, intuition, and all the things that come with those two concepts. The hard truth for me to reconcile here was that I’ve kept a lot of secrets my entire life about abuse that I experienced as a child in my adopted home.

Until this explosion of honesty had really come to me, I was still trying to fit into a family that doesn’t really accept me, love me, or respect me. I was still keeping their secrets, not telling anyone, even those I was in intimate relationships with, about the different abuses, neglect, and humiliation that I had suffered in their home. I was conditioned into keeping these secrets because I was threatened as a child that talking about these things would get me killed. I was literally afraid that my parents would kill me if I talked about the sick things they had done to me. However, I recently exposed these secrets, first to myself, and then to some of my close friends. I was finally able to get them off my chest.

I struggled with this, because I wondered if I was going against the idea that Satan had planted, of someone who is completely trusted because they can keep a secret. How did that match up with me needing to talk about all the things that had happened to me, things that I thought were my fault? I had actually been conditioned, as many survivors of abuse have, to think that these awful things were my fault. I brought this into meditation, and what came through to me is that you should only keep your own secrets. This means that if you have made an agreement with someone you trust, there’s a mutual understanding and benefit to discussing something privately and never having it go out of that circle. But when someone else forces their secret upon you, forcing or compelling you to keep their secret, you’re taking away their ability to own their own problems, or their own sins. They need to be able to sit with these things and deal with them on their own, because they aren’t yours.

The most important magickal thing that we can do to evolve the whole species is to have honest conversations. For anybody who’s been a victim of abuse, you absolutely need to talk about it, but make sure that you are able to talk about it with people that you can trust to keep that secret with you, not keep it for you. This is a key point, because when you’re keeping a secret simply because you’ve been told to, you’re offloading the energy of that secret knowledge, rather than letting the person it originated from keep it where it belongs. When you share a secret willingly, addressing it in a respectful time and place, it will be the best for all parties involved.

The ethic of consent runs through almost everything in black magick. This is why I look at some of the so-called satanic groups out there, which are bent on dominating others, often on a large scale, and say to myself “That’s not Satanic at all.” What Satan and the powers of darkness truly represent are individuality, freedom, and power. If by your consent and the consent of another person, you want to keep something between each other, that is an extremely powerful thing. On the flip side of that, in my opinion, we need to push hard, first in ourselves, then in our circles of family and friends, to get more honest with ourselves and ask what all the feelings inside of us actually are. Once we address our inner self with full clarity, not only does it impact our lives in a positive way, but it also impacts the other people around us. As you tell your story, whether it’s a terrible story of abuse or a great story of success, other people will benefit. Other people will find value.

Honesty is a serious magickal power, but it’s difficult. It’s an ongoing quest to be someone who can be completely trusted because you don’t lie, and also because you can keep a secret. I imagine that this is something that I’ll be actively working on for the rest of my life and maybe even beyond, but I’m happy that I’m working on it. I feel so much more confident, so much more at peace, and so much more like my genuine self when I know that my words can be trusted. This is supremely powerful, because not only can you trust me, but I know that I can trust myself, and at the end of the day, that’s truly all that matters.
