Subject: Women Leaders Connect at AWL Lunch

January 28, 2019 ♦ Issue 14
Women Leaders Connect in Albuquerque

More than 90 women registered for the Adventist Women Leaders (AWL) luncheon held Jan. 16 in Albuquerque, N.M.

Guest speaker Jennifer Stanford, a Seventh-day Adventist and CEO of a professional coaching company called Emergent Performance Solutions, assisted by her team of consultants Jessica Beans and Taylor McDonald, led the enthusiastic attendees in a unique workshop experience centered on emotional intelligence. Participants were able to identify key markers of their personalities and work styles and learn how to interact more effectively with others who think differently.

The banquet room hummed with conversations and laughter as the women engaged in self-assessment, group discussions, spiritual reflection and the opportunity to network and swap stories over lunch.

“When so many women responded to the invitation to attend the first division-wide AWL event, it confirmed our belief that a shared learning experience is needed, valued and appreciated by women leaders,” says Debra Brill, North American Division vice president for Ministries, who chairs the AWL Committee, established in 2018.

Afterward an attendee from the Southern Union territory remarked, “Thank you so much for doing this. It opened my eyes about how to relate better to the people I work with and has given me tools that I can use to improve in my leadership. I’m so glad I came!”

The presentation and workbook are licensed and may not be used for personal workshops. However, Stanford has provided access to several free resources designed to extend the learning experience and is willing to provide further consultations.

A Blessing & Prayer

Leadership is hard to define.
May you be the ones to define it with justice.

Leadership is like a handful of water.
May you be the people to share it with those who thirst.

Leadership is not about watching and correcting.
May you remember it is about listening and connecting.

Leadership is not about telling people what to do.
May you seek what people want and need.

Leadership is less about the love of power and more about the power of love. May you continue to undertake the role of a servant leader.

Leadership is continuing to walk in the path you have been given.
May you be confident in your call to lead.

As a leader, May your greatest strength be love.
Your greatest victory be the reward of peace.

God,
We ask your blessings on those in this room who have been called to lead.
Help them to ask:
“What do I need to learn?”
“How might I need to change?”
To whom do I need to listen?”
Grant them wisdom and courage to know and do what is right, good and true and to serve the common good for all.
May they always be guided by Your Spirit, which is the Spirit of community, the Spirit of justice, and the Spirit of true love.
Amen.

This blessing and prayer were given by committee member Ann Roda, vice president of Mission and Spiritual Care for Adventist HealthCare, at the Adventist Women Leaders luncheon. They were adapted from the Leader's Prayer by an unknown author and the works of author L. Annie Foerster.

We're reading Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High. The women who attended the luncheon received the book as a gift. Purchase a copy or borrow it from your local library and join us Feb. 1 in the Crucial Conversations Book Club on Facebook to discuss the first chapter. We can't wait to hear your ideas!
