Subject: Discover Wilma Kirk Lee's unexpected secret to finding balance

November 2021 | Issue 43

Wilma Kirk Lee

Wilma Kirk Lee believes the ability to have a balanced life boils down to one key idea: “You’ve got to be real clear about your calling.”

While the roles and duties may change during different seasons of a person’s life, Kirk Lee says the goal is always to understand how God wants us to use the gifts He’s given. It’s something the author, speaker, licensed therapist, mother, pastor’s wife and co-director of Family Ministries for the Southwest Region Conference has had to learn personally.

It can be extremely difficult when others bombard you with ideas of what they believe you should be doing.

“I’ve got to say clearly to the Lord, I did what you told me to do. I wasn’t overloaded with stuff because I was trying to make everybody happy,” she said. “It’s hard.”

For Kirk Lee it meant learning how to define herself when others saw her as only her husband’s wife, especially as she worked beside him.

“I've got to say clearly to the Lord, I did what you told me to do.”

“Finding out who I am as an individual continually seems to be a challenge,” said Kirk Lee, who believes she is “still in the process of becoming.” “… I have seen the Lord put me in places [and] looking around I say, ‘How did I get here and how does this work?’ I have been dumbfounded. He sees me as having value and I’ve only claimed where He says a person’s gifts make a place for them [Proverbs 18:16].”

She loves the story of Deborah, though the judge of Israel is only mentioned in the midst of a greater narrative in Judges 4 and 5.  Kirk Lee believes Deborah was a woman who knew who she was, Whose she was, and was extremely confident.

Kirk Lee also reminds herself of her value in God’s eyes with this passage from the Desire of Ages, page 668: “The Lord is disappointed when His people place a low estimate upon themselves. He desires His chosen heritage to value themselves according to the price He has placed upon them. God wanted them, else He would not have sent His Son on such an expensive errand to redeem them. He has a use for them, and He is well pleased when they make the very highest demands upon Him, that they may glorify His name. They may expect large things if they have faith in His promises.”
