Subject: As a leader, are you in tune with those around you?

 September 2021 | Issue 41

Lynelle Ellis

Lynelle Ellis believes whether sharing the gospel or interacting as a leader there is a common thread: listening.

“We have to be in tune with the people we are speaking to and do it in a way that is meaningful to them and not meaningful to me,” she said of sharing the gospel.

It’s a lesson she teaches her students at Walla Walla

University, where she serves as a professor and director of the Center for Media Ministry.

After graduating from Walla Wall University, she learned this herself in her first job as the manager of the then newly formed Blue Mountain Broadcasting Association. The television station is a collaboration of the Seventh-day Adventist churches in the Walla Walla Valley in Washington and Oregon. She realized she needed to convey the love of Jesus and His biblical truths in ways that were meaningful to those who were seeking.

“We have to be in tune with the people we are speaking to and do it in a way that is meaningful to them and not meaningful to me.”

It became a focus as she pursued her master’s and doctoral degrees in communication focused on ministry and theology. After serving as a professor at Southern University, she returned to Walla Walla University to teach and develop a master’s degree program in Cinema, Religion and Worldview. She also returned to the Blue Mountain Broadcasting Association as its board president.

Ellis found the lesson of listening applies in her personal life and her leadership journey too.

“I’m learning to listen, listen first,” Ellis said. “How can you know what will be meaningful if you haven’t listened first? It’s core to everything. If you are going to understand other people, you have to listen.”

She’s also had to learn to listen to herself and recognize when she’s feeling overwhelmed, struggling with the ideas of not being enough or being too much. Being able to identify those feelings and express them with her family has helped guide her and establish boundaries. It has also helped her turn to God in times of need.

“God values us so highly, infinitely more than what we can wrap our minds around,” Ellis said. “… He can’t value me and love me because I am a great person. He values and loves me because I am His child.”

Meditations

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
