DeeAnn Bragaw

Adventist Women Leaders (AWL) has joined the North American Division Women’s Ministries Department.

The community’s new home is part of a larger plan to help AWL grow, reach and serve more women leaders with resources, events and mentoring opportunities. The partnership was proposed by Wendy Eberhardt, NAD’s vice president for Ministries and AWL’s committee chair. The AWL committee prayed about the union and agreed to explore the possibility. Celeste Ryan Blyden, Columbia Union’s executive secretary and founder/director of AWL,

met with DeeAnn Bragaw, NAD’s director of Women’s Ministries, in October and the two solidified a plan to join forces.

“The department of Women’s Ministries serves all women, and we’re looking for fresh and relevant ways to minister to many different groups of women,” Bragaw says of the reason she welcomed the alliance. “Partnering with Adventist Women Leaders gives us the opportunity to better serve women leaders, and also provides an opportunity for young women to see that there is a place for them in leadership within our church, and a community of other women leaders as well.”

“Partnering with Adventist Women Leaders gives us the opportunity to better serve women leaders ...”

Let's Celebrate!

Our November 2022 issue of the Adventist Women Leaders newsletter is the 50th edition.

The AWL Committee is so grateful to Michele Joseph, Ph.D., who has been serving as managing editor since our first issue in July 2018. She continues to do an amazing job of telling our stories and keeping us connected through the newsletter, website and social media. Thank you Michele!

—The AWL Committee

Adventist Women Leaders was birthed in 2017 when Blyden invited Debra Brill, then NAD vice president for Ministries, and Ann Roda, vice president for Mission Integration and Spiritual Care at Adventist HealthCare, to partner in hosting a luncheon for 14 women leaders who were members of the NAD Executive Committee.

“Nine of the 14 were the first women in their position. We had a room full of history makers!” Blyden recalls. “And when they began sharing their stories and ministry journeys, we realized there was a connection, a great need and great opportunity to do more to support, nurture, mentor, advocate for and celebrate women called to leadership. And so that became our shared vision.”

That vision has blossomed into a global community of more than 300 women leaders who stay connected through the monthly newsletter, social media, Zoom events, and in-person events.

Bragaw has personally been part of the AWL community since its inception and said she has enjoyed the gatherings and the recent Virtual Mentor Series.

“The speakers have been relevant and inspiring,” Bragaw said.

To kick off the new year, NAD Women's Ministries Adventist Women Leaders will host the AWL Luncheon on Jan. 11, 2023, in Greensboro, N.C.

“The benefits [of the partnership] are just beginning!” Bragaw says. “We have the opportunity to reach more women leaders through the wider platform Women’s Ministries already provides. AWL provides a unique and needed niche in Women’s Ministries and helps people to understand that Women’s Ministries serves all women, not just a small segment of women. We’re excited to watch what God will do. We really are better together!”

  2. Receive a personalized report about your top 5 strengths and engage in activities and discussions designed to enhance your understanding of your outcomes; and

  3. Take home free books and tools to help you maximize your leadership potential.

Registration Checklist

  1. Register today for the luncheon.

  2. Check your email. A few days after you register, a personalized link for the StrengthFinders assessment will arrive.

  3. Take the assessment.

  4. Print out and/or download the results and bring them to the luncheon on Jan. 11.

The cost is $40 per person and includes a buffet lunch, a StrengthFinders assessment and report, presentations and activities, and books and resources for each participant.

“There is a beautiful freedom in being able to lead in the way God created us to be,” says Leah JM Dean, executive coach, author and keynote speaker for the luncheon.

Our insecurities do not dictate what it is that we are capable of doing.

“With God in the equation, He will give us exactly what we need to show up as long as we submit to Him,” Dean says.

Even if you’ve taken the assessment in previous seminars or other kinds of assessments, Dean believes there is value in repeating the process. She says as a person grows and experiences changes in their lives, they can see shifts in their development from one assessment to the next.

During the lunch, she’ll provide interactive activities and reflection exercises to help participants see how they can use their strengths. Dean will also share important tools for dealing with weaknesses.

“We all have weaknesses,” she says. “The question is, do we focus on the weakness or do we focus on the strength...? We will never be able to avoid the things we consider our weaknesses."

The real goal, Dean says, is to focus on leveraging our strengths to manage our weaknesses.

Don't miss this leadership development opportunity. Register today!
