8 Lessons Learned
(... and one I'm still learning)

Brenda Dickerson has had to learn on the job. She began working eight years ago for the Mid-America Union as an editorial assistant in the Communication department. As positions were vacated, she was promoted to assistant communication director and then five years ago to the department director and OUTLOOK editor.

This has required her to find resources to build her technical skills, pull from the organization skills she learned as a homeschooling mom, pay close attention to mentors’ actions and advice, and return to school. In August, Dickerson completed a master’s degree in organizational communication.

In all of this, she says, her best resource is time alone to think.

“It’s so easy to work, work, work and not evaluate,” she said.

Dickerson uses her lunch break to walk, think and pray.

“It helps me manage my stress,” she said.

Though she’s learned many lessons, there’s one she still hopes to tackle: public speaking.

“I would so much rather write than speak, truthfully,” said Dickerson, a self-described introvert. “But I am learning there are times when you need to stand up and face an audience and share your message verbally.”
Editor's Note: We asked our subscribers to tell us about the lessons they have learned while serving as a leader. Brenda Dickerson responded with these helpful tips. We want to hear from you too. Please share the lessons you have learned on your journey as a leader. Email us at connect@adventistwomenleaders.com.

Meditations
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

"I am so excited about the Adventist Women Leaders circle! Thank you for the time, effort, resources and creativity to help network, unite, and support women in various facets of ministry." — Heidi Baumgartner, communication director, Washington Conference
"Thank you for adding me to the prayer focus this week [Oct. 15]. It is such a blessing to know AWL members are petitioning our Father on my behalf. I’m at Annual Council this week where I realize more than ever the need for women in leadership in our Church. However, God is using the gifts of His committed daughters already in service in a powerful way, and it’s a privilege to be called. God bless you who are guiding this AWL ministry!" — Diane Thurber, president, Christian Record Services, Inc.
AWL is a community of women affirming, encouraging, and celebrating God's goodness to those He has called to lead.
