Our Focus: Let's Analyze Your Scene
Scenes are the building blocks of story.
Master the scene and you've mastered the story.
I'm inviting each of you to analyze one scene you're editing using the 5-step format below and, if you want, send it in to share and discuss.
Send in your replies by email or an attached Word doc.

Prep
1. Pick one scene in a story you're editing. Just one. :) And make sure it's a scene you want to "show" and not "tell."
2. Clarify the POV character. State that.
3. For this scene, what is the POV character's goal? How does that goal relate or connect to their story goal? Why do they want this scene goal?
Scene Analysis
Optional: Hit reply and send in the below information or copy and paste onto a word doc and send in by Thursday, April 15, 3pm Pacific/6pm Eastern.

Background to help us understand context: (1-2 sentences)
Take your best guess. It's okay if you're not sure. We can discuss!
1. Inciting Incident
“… event that kicks of your [scene].”
2. Progressive Complication
“…the escalating degrees of conflict that face the protagonist.”
In other words, a Turning Point via 1. Character action, or 2. Revelation.
3. Crisis -- the main conflict of your scene
“…a question [a situation] that offers a choice between two options.”
Either:
The Best Bad choice; or
Two Great Things (Irreconcilable Goods)
4. Climax -- what your character decides and does to act on that decision
“…the moment when a character acts on his crisis choice…the truth of character…the active answer to the question raised in the crisis…”
5. Resolution -- digesting what just happened
“The resolution…is crucial for the reader or viewer to fully metabolize the [scene].”
