[ASI] Why the Rush on Kavanaugh?

To ASI Supporters:

My new column, The Kavanaugh Fiasco and the Current Crisis, begins:

Conservatives who backed Judge Brett Kavanaugh without examining his record are looking like complete fools. Before the sexual assault charges surfaced, he was already on record saying the atrocious Supreme Court decisions on abortion-on-demand and “gay marriage” were “settled law.” Now, his character is under assault as questions surface about the party atmosphere and secular nature of his Jesuit-run Catholic high school. Catholic “education” has become another crisis.

If hearings proceed, in an open forum, we can anticipate Kavanaugh being questioned in detail about his drinking habits in high school. It won’t look good. Was he so drunk he can’t remember what he did back in 1982?

We don’t yet know whether the allegation of sexual assault against Judge Kavanaugh is true. It is suspicious timing. As I write in the column, “Knee-jerk supporters of Kavanaugh are claiming the woman, now a professor, is a far-left activist. But the other young man supposedly in the room with Kavanaugh and the young woman is not reassuring in his denial.”

A group of 65 women has responded:

We are women who have known Brett Kavanaugh for more than 35 years and knew him while he attended high school between 1979 and 1983. For the entire time we have known Brett Kavanaugh, he has behaved honorably and treated women with respect.

The problem for Kavanaugh is that, despite his denial, he was reportedly drunk at the time. We know his Jesuit-run high school, Georgetown Prep, was full of party boys, including one friend of Kavanaugh, Mark Judge, who wrote a book, Wasted, about how the school failed him and he became an alcoholic. The accuser apparently has notes from a therapist and passed a lie detector test. She claims Kavanaugh and Mark Judge had started drinking earlier and were heavily intoxicated. It is reported that, “In his senior-class yearbook entry at Georgetown Prep, Kavanaugh made several references to drinking, claiming membership to the ‘Beach Week Ralph Club; and ‘Keg City Club.’ He and Judge are pictured together at the beach in a photo in the yearbook.”

And this was at a Catholic high school.

My friends, we know that Kavanaugh is not a real conservative, and that he has a flawed character, based on his mishandling of the Vince Foster murder case.

Let’s postpone Thursday’s vote and conduct a careful character examination of this nominee.

This is a lifetime job. The Senate can’t get this one wrong.

I conclude:

After Kavanaugh’s withdrawal, which seems inevitable, we should demand the nomination of a real conservative, Catholic or non-Catholic, with an honest character. In fact, we can see that a conservative woman who understands the dangers of judicial tyranny and the cultural crisis in America is desperately needed on the Supreme Court. She could be a leader and role model.
