Dear Friend of America’s Survival:

Conservatives are looking pretty bad these days. They told us Robert S. Mueller was a straight shooter. Now they’re telling us he’s a bad guy. We just can’t depend on the conservative media or the conservative establishment any more.

But get this one:

Center for Security Policy President and CEO Frank J. Gaffney sent out a release griping about “champion of freedom” Rep. Trent Franks resigning from Congress. Gaffney said Franks was “a man of profound faith and I pray that he will reconsider this decision and remain in his role as a leader of conscientious and national security-minded conservativism in the House of Representatives.”

Washington, D.C.: a beautiful city but corrupt

Now we learn, according to AP, that a former aide to Republican Rep. Franks has said “the congressman repeatedly pressed her to carry his child, at one point offering her $5 million to act as a surrogate.”

Of course, Gaffney didn’t know the facts. He’s a good man, but he spoke too soon. He said Congressman Franks’ resignation was reportedly encouraged by House Speaker Paul Ryan “over concerns that the eight-term Arizona representative had spoken with two former staffers about serving as a surrogate to bear a child for his infertile wife and him.” Gaffney said, “In contrast to the abhorrent acts of sexual harassment or assault by others, if such conversations were considered ‘insensitive,’ an apology would seem to be sufficient—not terminating Mr. Franks’ distinguished and highly moral public service.”

An apology was not enough. There was more to the story. Apparaently offering a woman $5 million for sex, or to be a surrogate, when the woman is a staffer, is sick.

Franks is worth $33 million.

An honest conservative woman named Andrea Lafferty of the Traditional Values Coalition blew the whistle on this indecent proposal. She was approached by the female staffer in Franks’ office. Lafferty was quoted by AP as saying, “I accompanied (the former aide) to the meeting in the speaker's office where she said Congressman Trent Franks offered her $5 million if she conceived him a child.”

In regard to another fiasco, my  column on the conservative “dupes” who believed Mueller was an honest “straight arrow” got this response:

I wish the conservatives had listened to you when you warned about Mueller. The whole FBI seems to be corrupted by him and Comey and other left wing operatives. I appreciated your article although now it is probably to late to stop this witch hunt. It is too bad you were not invited on the talk shows and Fox News.

Some “conservative” websites didn’t run my column because I was critical of Rush Limbaugh and Andrew C. McCarthy.

We need a top-to-bottom shake-up in the conservative movement. George Washington said:

“Virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government.”

There is no freedom without responsibility.
