In a major victory, the "Advancing America's Priorities" Act (S. 3297), which had $24 million for the United Nations, went down to defeat. The bill got 52 votes but it needed 60.

Our thanks go to Senator Tom Coburn for leading the opposition. You can see the breakdown of the vote here. In remarks later in the day, after his victory, Coburn complained about the $24 million, saying that too much was already being spent on the U.N. and with no accountability.

Only three Republican Senators voted for the pro-U.N. bill. They were Coleman, Smith and Warner.

Through Senate passage of the "Torture Victims Relief Reauthorization" (H.R. 1678), which was one of the bills, Senator Harry Reid hoped to funnel $24 million to the so-called United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture for the operation of foreign treatment centers in such places as the "occupied Palestinian Territories," Lebanon and Russia.

Some of the U.N. money underwrites the Mandela Institute, which features a "Free Palestine" map on the home page of its website and provides assistance to alleged victims of Israeli aggression and torture.

We oppose funding for the U.N. and want to see a U.S. withdrawal from the world organization.

Senator Coburn has a very good source of information in the Internet about the massive and irresponsible spending at the U.N.

For America,

Cliff Kincaid, President
