SARAH STINSON-HURWITZ

Sarah Owen Stinson-Hurwitz, or SOSH for short, is a Norwalk-based artist who believes it is the responsibility of the arts to bring people together and has committed her practice to "explorations of intimacy and connection." She is passionate about engaging in the local arts community through participatory projects, festivals and murals. Her subjects range from the human figure to dreamlike landscapes and quiet snapshots of daily life. Sarah writes: "I allow a relationship with each piece to emerge intuitively keeping in mind that painting provides the unique opportunity to pull magic out of the quotidian. I soak my canvases in surreal color palettes and fill them with energetic brush strokes."  Sarah graduated from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 2018 with an interdisciplinary Bachelor's in Art and Gender Studies, with honors. AT CMU, she received several grants for her vulnerable portraiture and interactive Dinner Party series. Since then, her work has been included in multiple solo and group exhibitions in Connecticut, Pittsburgh, New York, Miami and Charleston. Sarah is one of the 10 artists commissioned to paint live as part of The SoNo Collection's #SoNoArtCares project. See her painting Sundown in July in the SoNo Connection's People's United Magnificent Room and in the live auction currently underway. See her website, and Instagram page.

Vernice writes: “I am a sparkly, Christian Jewish, Black White Girl from the Bronx with green eyes and white skin. From a child I sketched ‘fashion girls’ of all colors, shapes and sizes on paper, walls and clothing to express my own individuality. My experiences as a biracial girl & woman continue to evolve & inspire my art to embrace a soul’s significance and to respect others’ perspective."

MUSEUMS COMMISSION ARTISTS TO CREATE STANDOUT FACE MASKS

One of the main ways museums are starting to look different as they reopen is the ubiquity of face masks. Who would have believed, going into this year, that everyone roaming the galleries and grounds of our cultural institutions would be clad in tight sheets of fabric from ear to ear, that something called “personal protective equipment” would be the predominant fashion trend? But such is the situation we’re in, and we might as well make the most of it. Museums are modeling that attitude, making use of their distinguishing feature—their cultural assets—to beautify this new fact of life and collect some much-needed revenue in the process. Read more...
The Aldrich Museum commissioned exhibiting artist Laleh Khorramian to make them for its onsite staff and store, which she did by painting a large-format canvas containing a “hidden message” then cutting pieces of it into the mask pattern. In circulating the message in pieces, she means to “invok[e] a daisy chain joined by a collective intention.” These masks are the first edition in a series titled BEAKSHIELD; the museum says future editions will be released over the summer and fall. 5 WAYS TO TELL YOUR ARISTS' STORY ONLINE

There are plenty of easy online buying decisions that you can make with the tap of a screen, such as household essentials, clothing, and even dinner. But when it comes to buying art online, consumers are looking for more than just ease of purchase. A recent study has shown that sharing stories about your business outperforms hard-sell tactics (such as flash sales and discounts). This means that when a collector is purchasing an artwork online, they rely on stories to help them learn about artists and form connections with works of art, especially ones they might never see in person. On Artsy, the average distance between a buyer and seller is over 3,000 miles, which means that buyers may not get to see the pieces they buy until they’re hanging on the wall. Here are five ways to tell your artists’ stories online.  Read more...
