TRACY HOFFMAN

An Associate Member

Tracy Hoffman is a medium- and large-format fine art photographer currently living and working in Chappaqua, New York. She received her BFA in photography and printmaking from Purchase College where she studied with Jan Groover, Jed Devine, and Murray Zimiles. Her color and black and white photographs range from rhythmic landscapes to meticulously composed still-life arrangements influenced by 20th century painting, sculpture and collage. Her photographs have been awarded numerous honors and exhibited in many notable national and international exhibitions. Over the past decade Hoffman has been featured at the New Britain Museum of American Art, Westport Arts Center, Fowler-Kellogg Art Center and Strohl Art Center in Chautauqua, NY, The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO, Soho Photo Gallery, NY, Flinn Gallery, Greenwich, among many others. Her work has also been published in The Photo Review and Texas Photographic Society. At first glance, Tracy's medium appears to be pure photomontage. However, they are  based on "hand-built, table top constructions" in front of an 8x10 view camera with film, in a controlled studio environment. She has always been interested in the creative potential and visual experiences inherent in the way the camera optically translates and transforms three-dimensional objects and space into a two dimensional surface: "Transformation plays a big role in my work and I love to play and push the boundaries of photography." She says she first realized the transformative power of photography studying with Jan Groover at Purchase College: "She taught us that, we don't take photographs; we make photographs. And since that time, I continue to think of the view camera as a paintbrush and creative tool." See Tracy's websiteInstagram account and her ARTISTS TALK video.
EMILY HAMILTON LAUX

Emily Hamilton Laux uses photography and installation to address ideas about the human relationship with internal and external worlds. Born in Saigon, and raised in Cambodia, Paris and Washington, Laux has an MA from the American University School of International Service and a BA from Tulane University. Previously, she worked as a writer and editor in financial publishing in New York, London and Hong Kong. Between 2013 and 2015 she took post-graduate courses at the International Center of Photography. In Connecticut, she has worked as a photojournalist, gallery manager and arts publicist. Emily's 2015-16 Invasives: Beauty Versus Beauty (part I) addresses ideas about ecology, biodiversity, and individual notions of beauty in nature. She says the project is her personal exploration of the plants that grow in our backyards, along the edges of fields and parking lots, as well flora that are cultivated for their beauty. By portraying selected plant species in isolation or with one or two other species, she invites the viewer to question his/her own concepts of beauty and function in the landscape, and explore ideas about biodiversity through her observation of native, invasive, naturalized and cultivated species of plants. Her Invasives II is a year-long documentation of specific invasive plant species in several places near her Westport house. In 2017, Emily exhibited her work at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Winchester, Mass, and at numerous galleries in the Northeast, including the Davis Orton Gallery, the Westport Arts Center, and the Ridgefield Artists Guild, among others. Emily maintains a studio at Firing Circuits Studios in Norwalk, and is member of the Westport Artists Collective and the Ridgefield Guild of Artists. NATASHA KARPINSKAIA

Natasha Karpinskaia is a Russian-born artist, art historian, and educator, who has had numerous solo and group shows both nationally and internationally. Her work is at root abstract. She says that abstract art entices her with its primary artistic elements: color, shape, line, and texture. "I like working in layers, printing and painting over previous surfaces many times. To me it is evocative of our daily experiences with numerous strata encompassing various aspects." Her works are in many private and some corporate collections in the U.S. and Europe and she was a recipient of an individual artist fellowship from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts in 2004. She has been teaching courses in abstract painting, mixed media, printmaking, and art history at the Silvermine Guild of Art, Pyramid Atlantic in Washington, D.C., and other art centers. She was a professor of art history at the New York Academy of Art. She had also worked as a curator at the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, the largest repository of Russian art in the world. Natasha received her PhD (ABD) in American Art from Columbia University, an M.A. from the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia, and an M.A. from the University of Linguistics, Moscow. About her work, Natasha writes: "I approach art as an intellectual endeavor and always start with a particular idea. At the same time, my work is equally immediate, emotional and spontaneous, and often has a strong spatial element, a concept that I explored in my doctoral thesis at Columbia University." She adds, however, that an essential part of her work is humor and whimsy: "I like my viewers to laugh and have a good time." See her website, and Facebook page.
NORMA SCHLAGER

Norma Schlager is now an art quilter, one who is always happiest when most creative. She started as a traditional quilter but speaks about the time when she "no longer wanted to follow a pattern." Today, all of her wall hangings are original compositions, mostly using her own hand-dyed fabrics. Her designs are intuitive; she says she draws her inspiration from many places, including the worlds of nature, travel, architecture, or just the pure love of color - her quilts are usually distinguished by their use of saturated hues and vivid contrast and she says she loves exploring different concentrations and combinations of color.  Her quilts are mostly composed of abstract forms, often using wiggly or "wonky piecing." She occasionally adds fused raw edge appliqué and extensive free motion machine quilting. Norma had a one-woman show, The Art of Stitch: An Exhibit of Contemporary Fiber Art by Norma Schlager in 2015 at the Brookfield Craft Center and her work was also featured in the 2014 exhibition, Let Me Quilt One More Day at the New Britain Museum for American Art. Norma regularly shows her work with the various groups of which she is a member: FANE (Fiber Artists of the North East), SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates), a local FiberWorks group, and the Surface Design Association. She also has work in the collection of the Yale New Haven Medical Building. See Norma's weblog here.
