OUR NEWS
CAFC RECEIVES $50,000 CULTURAL FUND GRANT
The Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County (CAFC) was one of the early beneficiaries of the CT Cultural Fund, administered by CT Humanities. CAFC, as all 7 other Designated Regional Service Organizations, received a $50,000 grant from the fund. We thank CT Humanities, which has worked closely with CT Office of the Arts to bring the Cultural Fund to fruition. Elizabeth Shapiro, Director of Arts, Preservation & Museums for the state, noted, “The work that the Office of the Arts and is doing in conjunction with CT Humanities comes from a sense of joy and a deeply held set of shared values. Working collaboratively, we have already accomplished more in the past 2 years than ever before. Our voices are stronger when we are collaborating.” This is general operating support, and our priorities for the year are: 1. Increasing and Diversifying our Membership & Audience through our "Cultural Alliance 2.0” strategy, involving creating a "convergence network" of some 70 "Culture Connectors" over 2 years, all of whom will be offered modest honoraria and commit to identifying and connecting with communities and cultures that often operate in isolation from each other. 2. Hire additional staff and increase fundraising capacity by hiring a development consultant or staff member; and 3. Improve IT/ Online Presence: Our website, social media, and email are key to our success. We will prioritize improvements and solutions that keep up with the ever-changing landscape of digital marketing by updating our website, establishing a blog platform to regularly amplify and connect the voices of our members one to another; explore new ways of expanding access to our FCBuzz-Events page through a widget; and explore the possibilities of an interactive platform for the regional network.
SAVE THE DATE: December 8, 10am-4pm

SPOTLIGHT: BRIDGEPORT MOVING FORWARD
NOW AVAILABLE AS PODCAST
You can hear our November Spotlight on Arts & Culture: “Bridgeport Moving Forward: BRIDGEPORT ART TRAIL 2021 broadcast as a podcast here. For the last 12 years, November has meant the Bridgeport Art Trail (BAT) – where some 200 artists’ studios are open to the public, in addition to new gallery exhibits, parties, live music, and more. This year, after last year’s BAT, where COVID forced events to go virtual, the 13th BAT will be the biggest ever. In addition to open studios, there are several major openings of key Bridgeport cultural organizations.

Our guests were Suzanne Katchmar, executive director of City Lights Gallery and of the Bridgeport Art Trail; Jane Davila, Executive Director of Metro Art Studios; Steve di Costanzo, General Manager of WPKN; Maisa Tisdale, Executive Director of the Mary and Eliza Freeman Center for History & Community; Cris Dam and Dustin Malstrom, owners of URSA Gallery in Bridgeport’s Arcade; and real estate developer Phil Kuchma.

She is currently on the Board of Trustees and serves as the co-chair of the development committee for the Bruce Museum. She has extended her ability to capture the grandeur of the sea to many other subjects including landscapes, animals, and still life. Website  Email: felicitykostakis@gmail.com
Michele Riche currently lives in Connecticut, her home state, after spending many years living in New York City. She received her BFA at St. Lawrence University and continued her education in New York, taking classes at The School of Visual Arts, among other institutions, while working in development for non-profit organizations. In 2018, Michele decided to leave the routine of a 9 to 5 job to devote her career and life to her art. Michele has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions, as well as being selected as a Spotlight Artist recipient at Artexpo New York in 2021. She received “Best In Show” at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, CT in 2019, and had a solo exhibition at the Mattatuck Museum that year. She moved to Connecticut in the spring of 2021. Over the last 30 years, Terri C Smith has curated more than 100 exhibitions for museums and other nonprofit arts organizations, working with approximately 400 nationally and internationally exhibiting contemporary artists. In 2011, she cofounded the nationally-recognized contemporary art space, Franklin Street Works, (Stamford, CT) where she was the Creative Director until the organization permanently closed due to financial strains from the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020. In addition to curating, her freelance work has included: teaching Feminisms and the Arts as an adjunct professor at UConn-Stamford; working as a copywriter for annual reports, websites, press releases, and grants; archiving for Blondie's Christ Stein, for the Al Held Foundation, and for Alison Knowles, a founding member of Fluxus; and creating dozens of radio features. Website Email: tcamillesmith@gmail.com
Brian Whelan began his journey as an artist just outside his own studio door, in the medieval churches and dwellings of East Anglia. The vestiges of the medieval art form resonate with Brian’s Irish Catholic roots. His oeuvre, like much medieval art, depicts a sublime comedy of life’s glories and tragedies. In addition to painting religious subjects, Brian also feels compelled to paint London, the city of his birth. His most recent exhibitions have been in the UK and the US (CT and PA). Future shows will include NYC. Brian’s Connecticut studio and home is on Westport Road between Westport and Wilton. His works can be found in public and private collections worldwide. Voyager has multiple levels of meaning, one of which is the representation of a dream state where we travel between daytime reality and the musings and imaginings of our sleeping self. Facebook
Sherri Wolfgang's latest solo exhibition, American Pathos, is at Dacia Gallery. It has taken her six years to complete the dozen figurative oil paintings, having drawn deftly upon Renaissance formats and old Master techniques. ART INFLUENCES SENSE OF BELONGING

A new report published by the Society of General Internal Medicine finds that some students in medical school would like to see universities diversify their collections of institutional portraiture. The survey suggests that art plays an important role in creating a welcoming space in higher education; alternatively, homogenous paintings and statuary can make women and minority groups feel excluded from institutional spaces. The study, which was conducted by students and a professor at Yale School of Medicine, comes at a time when professional and graduate programs are trying to remove barriers for students who have historically been alienated from higher learning because of bigotry and prejudice.
