Subject: ALERT Alumni Update | June 2022

June 1, 2022

Dear Alumni,

Congratulations to the 26 men of Unit 66 that advanced last Friday, and to the 13 men from Units 63, 64, and 65 who are graduating this Friday!

As this coming semester draws to a close, I have been struck by the idea that life is full of disappointment and dissatisfaction. That the older one gets, the more disillusionment seems to creep into life. More importantly, I have been realizing that the antidote to this disillusionment is ultimately Jesus. This is why our hearts long for eternity; one can never find horizontally what was always meant to be found vertically. As the complexities of life continue to grow, remember to look up to Christ in everything.

I want to give you some updates on some things that have been happening here, and let you know about some future opportunities to get on your calendars.

Alumni Engagement

One of our goals is to provide more opportunities for our Alumni to be involved in the program over the course of the year. One of the highlights of the past few months was our 28th-anniversary reunion in January. There were over 360 people who attended over the weekend, and we had Captain Clay Rowland back as the keynote speaker. In April, the ALERT Sergeants Club hosted an alumni gathering during the Family Conference here on campus for all the alumni and Battalion here that week, and in May we had six alumni join Unit 66 for their Endurance Hike.

If you are interested in joining us for a future Endurance Hike (Unit 67’s is scheduled for October 17-19), would like to visit campus (alumni can get up to 3 free nights of room and board), or want more information about reunions or gatherings throughout the year, please get in touch with Lt. Samuel Winkler (swinkler@alertacademy.com).

The dates for the next ALERT Reunion are January 27-29, 2023. It will be held here on campus, and as always we would love to see you there! Watch our social media accounts and the alumni emails for more details as the Reunion gets closer.

PNW Alumni event

SSgt. Scott Shetler (Unit 28) is hosting a Pacific Northwest ALERT Alumni event in July:

  • Who: ALERT Alumni and families

  • When: Saturday, July 30th, 2022 (day event)

  • Where: Silver Falls State Park (near Salem, OR)

  • What: A fun time to reconnect - food, fellowship, hiking (scenic waterfalls - not ALERT style), and swimming

If you are interested in attending, or would like more information, email Lt. Winkler and he will put you in touch with Scott.

Answers to Your Questions

This spring I sent out a video via email and our alumni Facebook groups, introducing myself as the incoming director and giving my perspective on the direction of ALERT. Thank you for all of the engagement with that video; your questions, comments, and concerns are very important to me. We have compiled all of the feedback and questions, and put together a document that answers the most commonly raised questions. You can read those answers here. I am also reaching out directly to some people to answer their questions and comments in person, depending on the nature of the issues raised.

If you feel like your questions or concerns were not addressed adequately in my response, or if you would like additional details or explanations, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly. Again, thanks for all your feedback, and for all your prayers and support.

Stand strong!
