For the 2022 Juneteenth celebration, AfriKin seeks to continue its already successful programming in the City of Opa-locka that specifically addresses some of the community’s most immediate needs–the future of our children. AfriKin Safe Spaces asks what our communities would be like if we all felt safe. The relief to just be, AfriKin Safe Spaces takes a moment to focus on what a harmonious and peaceful existence within neighborhoods can be like and how it can be experienced together for encouragement through the arts and positive cultural influences.
Taking a page from Harlem’s famed bookstores where community-focused talks were hosted, AfriKin Safe Spaces has engaged notable speakers, workshops, traditional African drummers and dancers, visual and performing artists, guided meditations, karaoke, and murals to engage, educate, and inspire.
Juneteenth is a time for reflection, assessment, and self-improvement. Black Lives Matter protests in the summer of 2020 brought a renewed focus to the historical oppression of Black people and AfriKin found it fitting to focus this year’s event on “AfriKin Safe Spaces - culture, community, and camaraderie”.
