The AfriKin Art Fair VIP Opening, titled "An Evening of Purpose", is a highly anticipated event in the art and cultural scene, scheduled for December 3rd at the Maison AfriKin, Scott Galvin Community Center in North Miami. This event, part of the Miami Art Week/Art Basel Art of Black Miami events, is a celebration of African art and culture, featuring 33 artists from Global Africa. It promises an immersive experience that blends traditional African elements with contemporary expressions, showcasing the richness and diversity of African arts.


Key highlights of this night to remember include:


1.     Visual Art Exhibits: Showcasing a diverse range of artworks by 33 artists, representing the vibrant and dynamic art scene of Africa and its Diaspora.

 

2.     Music and Dance Performances: The event will feature traditional African musical performances, including instruments like Kora, Balafon, Djembe, and Talking Drum. These traditional elements will be juxtaposed with modern dance forms like Jazz, Tango, and Belly dance, highlighting the African roots in these popular Western art forms.

 

3.     Educational Insight: The audience will be enlightened about the connections between popular Western art forms and their African origins, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation.

 

4.     AfriKin AI Experience: A unique feature of the event is the integration of AI in art, where artists used AI technology to create immersive works that interpret traditional art in an Afro-Futurist manner.

 

5.     Keynote Address by Chief Dr. Nike Davies-Okundaye: The event will be graced by the presence of the 2023 AfriKin Award of Excellence Honoree, Chief Dr. Nike Davies-Okundaye, a renowned Nigerian artist specializing in Batik and Adire textile art. She will speak on the theme "Bridging Histories and Crafting Futures", sharing her insights on preserving traditional Nigerian textiles and the role of art in shaping the future.

 

6.     All-White Attire with African Chic: The dress code for the evening is an all-white attire with a splash of African chic, encouraging guests to blend contemporary fashion with African aesthetics.

 

7.     Gourmet Lite Bites and Curated Open Bar: The event will also offer an array of gourmet lite bites and a curated open bar for the guests to enjoy.

 

8.     Support for the AfriKin Scholarship Fund: Proceeds from the evening will support the AfriKin Scholarship Fund, aiding South Florida youth in pursuing careers in the arts.

 

Hosted by Nicky Says Yolo and Fonz D’Niscio, the event is not just a celebration but a movement to uplift and empower, bringing together beautiful people from all walks of life for engaging conversations and a shared appreciation of Global Africa's beauty and brilliance.

Delou Dance Africa – African Drum & Dance

Delou Africa Dance Ensemble (D.A.D.E) is founded by Njeri Plato and has been performing, educating and teaching traditional West African dance, drum and music in South Florida since 1987. D.A.D.E. performances include an artistic collective of drummers, musicians, dancers and storytellers that exemplify high energy, talent, excitement, and passion. Delou artist perform and play an array of traditional West African rhythms and instruments in vibrant costumes. The movements and rhythms of Delou Africa Dance Ensemble are executed with explosive energy leaving the audience with a memorable and extraordinary experience.


Zest Collective – Jazz Dance

Zest Collective Contemporary Performance Art is a dynamic dance company that was founded on November 2, 2013, by the visionary duo of Gentry Isaiah George and Tyler Garacci. Their mission with Zest Collective is to foster collaborative opportunities for emerging young artists, both in the performing and visual arts, within the vibrant cultural landscape of New York City's Washington Heights Neighborhood.


In South Florida, Zest Collective has left an indelible mark, gracing stages at esteemed venues such as the Miami Hispanic Cultural Arts Center, Miami Light Project, African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, the Broward County Main Library, and many others. Through their performances, Zest Collective showcases the power of dance to tell stories, evoke emotions, and celebrate the rich tapestry of Black culture, leaving audiences inspired and uplifted. As they prepare to take the stage at the AfriKin Art Fair VIP Opening, "An Evening of Purpose," Zest Collective promises to once again deliver a captivating performance that honors their mission and their ode to Black culture.


Afro-Tango Fusion

Experience Curt Douglas Hampstead and Linda Nobel's breathtaking performance, merging an ancient African dance of worship originating in the Congo, called Tango with European and Middle Eastern dance. Witness the captivating phenomenon of what is now known as Argentine Tango as they infuse it with unparalleled artistry, taking you on an exhilarating journey through its history and future. Prepare to be enchanted by this mesmerizing dance, brewed in Africa, distilled in Argentina and now shaken and stirred by Curt and Linda for a taste of “Afro Tango Fusion”.

 

Miami Bloco - Samba

To hear samba is to hear the living echoes of joyful resistance spanning from the transatlantic enslaved trade to the ports of Brazil; Now a global phenomenon, Samba is in constant evolution, including here in Miami through MIAMIBLOCO’s cultural work, which weaves the roots of AfroBrazilian percussive traditions with Gnawa, and Afrodiasporic living traditions of South Florida.


Samba is more than music and dance, samba is a social movement deeply rooted in a legacy that speaks of true resilience, the values of strong community and the inescapable beauty of the African Diaspora.

Miamibloco is a samba-based percussion cultural not for profit organization providing access to AfroBrazilian percussion education, cultural experiences, and performances across South Florida since 2017.  By honoring samba and fomenting cultural exchange, Miamibloco aims to collectively represent the sound of the Miami diaspora through its community players and rhythms. 

 

Leah Gayle – Belly Dance

Leah aka Nadia Sol, will be performing a belly dance style called Saidi which is a folk dance out of Upper Egypt in Africa.

Morikeba Koy - Kora

The kora, a stringed instrument native to West Africa, is an integral part of African music and culture. With its unique construction and mesmerizing sound, the kora has stood the test of time, captivating audiences throughout generations. One cannot discuss the cultural impact of the kora without acknowledging its central role within African societies. In many West African countries like Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, and Mali, the kora is deeply intertwined with social gatherings, religious ceremonies, and storytelling traditions. Griots continue to use the enchanting melodies of the kora to accompany their tales of history and folklore, passing down generations’ worth of knowledge through music.

Ba Saturnin – Djembe Drum

The significance of Djembe, one of the most iconic African music instruments, cannot be overstated. With its rich history and cultural importance, the Djembe has transcended geographical boundaries to become a beloved instrument around the world.

  • The rhythmic beats produced by this instrument have an innate ability to evoke feelings of joy, unity, and celebration.

  • The communal nature of playing the djembe allows individuals to connect on a deeper level, transcending language barriers and fostering a sense of belonging.

  • It has been observed that engaging with music played on a djembe can elicit strong emotions such as happiness, excitement, and even nostalgia.

  • The mesmerizing sound vibrations created by this drum have therapeutic effects, promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels.

 

Connis Vanterpool – Sax


Connis Vanterpool, a native of the picturesque island of Sint Maarten, has established himself as a prominent saxophone virtuoso in the local music scene. Born and raised on the island, Connis, Berklee College of Music graduate, developed a deep passion for music from an early age, and his journey with the saxophone has been nothing short of remarkable.


Today, Connis Vanterpool can often be found gracing the stages of locally and internationally, where his soulful melodies enchant audiences and create a captivating atmosphere. His music transcends genres, but he particularly shines in the realm of jazz and reggae, where his improvisational skills and expressive playing style leave a lasting impression on listeners.


One of Connis's notable contributions to the island's cultural tapestry is his involvement in "Jazz and Wine," a monthly event that brings together both local talents and international artists. Through this event, Connis Vanterpool has played a pivotal role in promoting the appreciation of jazz music on Sint Maarten, creating unforgettable moments for music enthusiasts and wine connoisseurs alike.


With his saxophone in hand, Connis Vanterpool continues to be a cherished figure in Sint Maarten's vibrant music community, captivating hearts and souls with every note he plays.
