SafariSnaps Birding Tips - Know Your Egrets
Did you know there are four different egret species you can spot on Africam’s live cameras? Here’s how to tell them apart:
🪶 Western Cattle Egret Appearance: Stocky with a yellow bill and shorter neck. Often seen following buffalo or other wildlife to catch insects they disturb. Range: Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, found in grasslands, wetlands, farmland, and around livestock.
🪶 Little Egret Appearance: Elegant and slender with a thin black bill, black legs, and bright yellow feet. Look for them delicately hunting in shallow water. Range: Throughout most of Africa, especially near coasts, estuaries, rivers, and inland wetlands.
🪶 Great Egret Appearance: Tall and pure white with a long yellow bill and black legs. Notice their graceful neck and large size compared to other egrets. Range: Widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, found near lakes, rivers, marshes, and coastal lagoons.
🪶 Yellow-billed Egret (Intermediate Egret) Appearance: Slightly smaller than the Great Egret with a stout yellow bill and shorter neck. They often stand alone or quietly feed along the water’s edge. Range: Scattered across sub-Saharan Africa, often in inland wetlands, floodplains, and grasslands with nearby water sources.
🎥 Tip: Watch for their feeding behaviour - quick stabbing strikes into water or careful stalking through grass for insects and frogs. |
