Live Cameras for Cheetah Births at HESC Maternity Boma

The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC), Africam and Explore.org are buzzing with excitement as we anticipate the possible birth of cheetah cubs from Tammy and Becky, two nine-year-old cheetahs. If they are carrying, it will be their first time becoming mothers.

Pregnancy and Gestation

Cheetah pregnancies last about 93 to 95 days. As a precaution, Tammy and Becky were moved to the maternity area a month before their expected due dates to ensure a stress-free environment.

Maternity Care and Birth Signs
The maternity boma provides a secure, quiet space for the mothers-to-be, minimizing stress and outside disturbances. If either Tammy or Becky are not pregnant, they will return to their usual enclosures to continue their daily routines. If they are, we anticipate subtle signs such as a slight increase in belly size or a shift in behaviour, which we can observe via the live cameras

Rewilding and Conservation Efforts

Cheetah populations have suffered significantly due to habitat fragmentation and human interference. HESC works tirelessly to combat genetic bottlenecking through managed breeding and eventual rewilding. When a cheetah is ready to be released, it is first acclimated to its new environment in a controlled area before full release.

A Rare and Special Opportunity

With the live cameras set up in the maternity boma, viewers worldwide can witness this extraordinary moment in real-time. Whether it’s watching the expectant mothers resting and —hopefully—the first glimpses of newborn cubs, the experience will offer unparalleled insight into the beauty of cheetah births and conservation.

Stay tuned as we follow Tammy and Becky’s journey. If all goes well, we may soon be welcoming the next generation of these incredible animals!

The cameras will go live on the 2nd of April on Africam.com
