Volunteer Spotlight:
Marlene Tobias

April 11th marks Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity’s 28th anniversary. It also marks a significant achievement of a key person in our community who put her faith into action.

In 1990, Marlene Tobias was the Adult Education Coordinator at First Presbyterian Church, but she took a leap of faith after asking herself, “Are you going to study the Bible forever or are you going to do something about it?”

By April, Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity was incorporated. Shortly afterward, she and her team held a groundbreaking ceremony for the first Habitat family, Dave and Zelda Gallegos. By November 1991, the home had been dedicated to the Gallegos.

“Excitement was the feeling that kept them moving onward and upward,” Marlene declared. The team forged life-long friendships and, more importantly, they took action that forever changed the lives of so many burdened with housing issues.

Marlene remained involved with Habitat over the years as she served as Board President, but she eventually took a step back when her term as President ended in 1994. “It’s like sending your child off to kindergarten,” she said. “It’s a time to watch it grow…things need room to change.”

Twenty-eight years later we are nearing our 100th home dedication. Things have changed but our mission remains the same. We encourage you to take action like Marlene. Even the smallest action can make a huge impact on families’ lives. Leave a legacy with Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity.

And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary. – Galatians 6:9
