Have you noticed the new line item on your bill?

The rising cost of energy has been a topic of conversation across the nation, but did you know the dialogue actually began in 2021? In May of 2021, Black Hills Energy announced an additional line item would appear on customers' bills between June 2021 and May 2022 to manage the increased fuel and purchased power costs for customers that accrued during the cold snap last February. The average residential customer should be seeing a line item of $11.06 per month on their bill.

According to the United Way of the Black Hills' 2019 Community Needs Assessment, housing costs were, by far, the most prevalent reason for a

Black Hills individual to call 211 Helpline for assistance in any county.

At the top of the list of callers' needs was utility assistance.

For many, an additional $11.06 per month doesn't seem like much, but for the 1 in 11 South Dakotans who pay more than half their income on housing, it is a burden. If you or someone you know is struggling with their utility costs this winter, please contact 211 Helpline or visit Black Hills Energy's website for support.
