The Annual Golden Coyote exercise included Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity for the first time in its 30 year history. Thirty two service persons from eight countries, working under the leadership of J Scull Construction, completed wall raising, roof framing, masonry,  and utility services on what is Habitat’s first “home” for volunteers, partner families and staff. Thanks in part to Habitat committee and National Guard member John Riker, who first raised the question about Guard service with Habitat, Habitat’s need for cost-saving labor on a central location for Habitat’s training and operation is no longer a dream.

FH Executive Director, Scott Engmann, notes: “The Guard’s support, along with match funding from the John T. Vucurevich Foundation, fast forwarded this project from a dream to reality over the last year, and we are so pleased with the amazing work of the Guard leaders who excelled, even in our extreme weather. A host of local companies have also supported this project including our entire design team, local subcontractors and First Interstate Bank, with more joining each month to make this facility affordable so we can expand how we put God’s love into action building homes, communities and hope in the Black Hills.” The National Guard training service is valued at over $100,000.00.

A Heart for Giving in a Crayon Bank
Written by Scott Hultgren – Lead Minister First Christian Church

At the beginning of 2014 First Christian Church made a commitment to be  involved in Habitat for Humanity’s Apostles Build along with many other  churches in the area. Our church was excited to be a part of building a house  for a family here in the Rapid City community. We began to inform our  congregation of our commitment to the project through prayer, volunteering  and finances.

One of our families, a single mom and her grade school age daughter began talking about the Apostles Build project at church and how they could give. This mom and daughter are in the very early stages of perhaps getting a Habitat House built for their family. Mom began to share with her daughter the principle of sacrificial giving, and told her that by giving to the Apostles Build project now that perhaps when they are eligible to receive their own house that others would give in the same way. This mom encouraged her daughter to give some of her own money to contribute to the churches Apostles Build commitment.

This eventually resonated in the mind of this 5th grade girl and soon she came to her mother holding her big, pink Crayon bank where she had been collecting change for some time. As she held the Crayon bank up to her mom she said, “Momma, I want to give my money to the church’s Apostles Build now so that maybe someday somebody else will help us out to build our house.” Mom and daughter counted up all the change in the bank and brought it to the church the following Sunday morning. The amount taken from the Crayon bank was just over $50. An amazing sacrifice for a little girl who doesn’t have a lot to begin with but who gave it all.

At the Family Worship Celebration in March at the church, this young follower of Jesus was recognized and applauded for her sacrifice in giving, she even brought her pink Crayon bank to show the church. Since then other kids and their families have been cleaning out their change collections to give to the Apostles Build project.

On May 3rd, an eager crew of 26 women from the Rapid City area volunteered on a Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity construction site in recognition of National Women Build Week. Now in its seventh year, National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day to help build affordable housing in their local communities. The week also spotlights the homeownership challenges faced by women. More than 13,000 volunteers partnered with 300 Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the country.

In Rapid City, the volunteers worked to construct the exterior walls of the Hunter’s new home, alongside the future homeowner. Women from every skill level and occupation came out to lend a hand, including volunteers from Black Hills Corp, Moyle Petroleum, Ellsworth Air Force Base, and several local churches. They were led by AmeriCorps National Construction Crew Leader, Valerie Haeder. The home is hoped to be completed in the late fall of 2014.

Valerie Haeder is currently serving with Black Hills Area Habitat in the role of Construction Crew Leader. Valerie’s choice to serve with Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity stemmed from her interest in drafting and architecture and her desire to learn more about the construction process. She came to Habitat with a small amount of knowledge and a large amount of willingness to learn.
space
Over the past 9 months, Valerie has expanded her construction knowledge to give her the confidence to lead volunteers in different aspects of constructing a home. She is also using her service experience to create training materials to help future volunteers understand the different aspects and experiences of serving with Habitat.
Valerie’s service has made a lasting impact on the work of Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity and will allow us to grow in our work with volunteers.
