HEALTHFUL LIFE BLOG HIGHLIGHT
What About Sugar Substitutes? Our Nutritionist Weighs In

Did you know what October marks the start of? Pumpkins on the porch? The time to pull out your Fall/Winter wardrobe? Yes and Yes, but it’s also baking season! With all those sweet treats tempting us, it’s time to talk sugar substitutes with our nutritionist Erica Haag. Erica is a busy wife, mother, nutritionist who lives in Evergreen, CO.

Erica let us know up front that she’s not a big cheerleader for sugar substitutes.
Welcome Two New Team Members to Our Team!

Rather than bore you with a bio of our NEW team members, that you can already access here, we posed five questions for them to answer.

First up is Erica Haag, who is a Board Certified Nutritionist.

1. What's the worst thing you can eat?

Erica: The worst thing is soda - regular or diet are both terrible. The amount of sugar in one soda is more than you should consume in a whole day. These are empty calories with no nutrient value, unlike if you ate sugar found naturally in fruit. Diet soda is just as bad because you are trading sugar for chemicals which are harmful to the body and brain.

2. What's the most common mistake people make that cause them to fail at their diet?

Erica: The most common mistake I see is people trying to follow a strict and extremely limiting diet versus working on small changes that become part of a lifestyle. If you make eating healthy a part of who you are and have it as a daily routine, you’ll be more likely to maintain that over time.

3. What are the absolute healthiest foods that you recommend eating daily?

Erica: Leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, berries, nuts, avocados, eggs, olive oil and lean proteins (such as chicken breast) are great staples for everyone!

4. What's one thing people might not know about you? A hidden (but not anymore) talent?

Erica: I love to sing!

5. What is your most oft repeated advice to clients?

Erica: I talk to every client about how much stress affects our health and weight loss potential. If you aren’t managing your body’s response to stress, you will never lose the weight that you want to or be as healthy as you can be.

Next up is Michael Gjenvick (Silent G), Chef and Nutritionist.

1) Before you meet with clients to go over meal preparation and execution, what do you need to know?

Michael: I would like to get to know the client on a personal level and understand their food history before we begin. Food preferences, aversions, allergies, previous dieting experiences, access to food, budget, and comfort in the kitchen will guide my decisions on the best place to start. I would want to discuss the current barriers in their life that have been keeping them from already eating in the fashion that they wish. This will allow us to create individualized techniques to combat those barriers and make changes that will last.

2) What kind of services will you be offering Healthful Life MD clients?

Michael: I will be offering both culinary and nutrition services for the clients. Personal chef services will include meal planning, shopping, cooking, and cleaning for the patient. Customized cooking classes will be offered to fit the clients needs and interests, giving them the tools to flourish in their home kitchen. Individualized nutrition counseling will also be provided to understand the patients struggles with diet and help them reach their goals through education, motivation, and accountability.

3) What would your last meal be?

Michael: I don’t know what the meal would be, but I would definitely finish it off with a couple of my grandmother’s cannoli.

4) Favorite Restaurant in Colorado?

Michael: As one of the chefs at Frasca Food & Wine in Boulder, I am very partial. However, I do love me some soup dumplings at Lao Wang Noodle House in Denver.

5) What led you to become a chef and nutritionist?

Michael: My mother was an excellent cook and instilled a passion in me for food from a young age. As a chef I began reading about our food system and the health trends of our country. I started to question my role within that system and wanted to learn about how the food we eat contributes to our well-being. I pursued becoming a registered dietitian nutritionist so that I could help people take control of certain aspects of their health through the food they eat. Using both my expertise as a chef and nutritionist, I want to teach people the tools to eat delicious food that will nourish their body.
