TEAM MEMBER PROFILE
Meet Liz Daeninck
Healthful Life MD Registered Dietitian

Liz has over 15 years experience as a registered dietitian working with both individuals and groups to help facilitate lifestyle changes to benefit health. Her philosophy is to meet clients where they are, partnering with them to make gradual, sustainable changeto reach their nutritional, movement and health goals.

1) Why did you become a dietitian?
This is actually my second career. I became a competitive athlete in my mid-twenties and wondered how my nutrition intake was affecting my performance. I started to research sports nutrition and was fascinated by what I discovered. That led me down the path to pursue an education in nutrition and then exercise physiology.

2) Why are you passionate about helping people with weight loss?
I love that I get to support people through a significant life transformation. Helping them see they can make changes they perceived to be impossibleoftentimes for many years—and being there to encourage them when they may feel 'stuck' is amazing. The work I do is hugely challenging AND rewarding.

3) How do you stay fit and healthy?
Life is so busy it is very difficult to prioritize looking after ourselves. By blocking time out for exercise and meditation, while ensuring I get adequate sleep, I am able to fit all the important pieces into my daily life. Admittedly, I have had to adjust my expectations and spend less time exercising then I did when I was a competitive athlete, but I have realized even 10-15 minutes of exercise at a time can be of benefit.

4) What are some of your personal hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy finding different ways to be active outdoors, by riding my bike, running, hiking and cross country skiing. I also have been practicing yoga for at least a decade, which has been hugely beneficial for injury prevention. When I have time, I also enjoy sewing.

5) What is your go to power breakfast?
Oh that’s easy, a protein shake! I blend almond milk, frozen berries, protein powder and ground flaxseed or a blend of seeds.

6) Anything else unusual or interesting you’d like to share about yourself?
I was a competitive rower. I am Canadian. I have worked on three dietary research studies. I love to travel and have been to 10 countries.

7) Is there a piece of encouragement you would like to share with our readers?
There WILL be times when you struggle and fall back into old behaviors. Do not get discouraged! These are opportunities for lessons in how to do things differently the next time.

HEALTHFUL LIFE BLOG HIGHLIGHT
Weight Loss Food Rules Debunked
By Liz Daeninck, MS, RD - Registered Dietitian

The internet is teeming with information about diet. Search engine results produce hundreds of articles suggesting rules for everything food related—foods you should never eat, foods you should eat, the best power foods, top 10 food rules, and on and on. While these articles are sometimes interesting, it is important to know what they suggest can be less than helpful.

Establishing rules for food consumption can be good, and is especially helpful when working to lose weight, but anytime you assign blanket rules (such as NEVER eat this food, etc.) to food and weight loss you risk your efforts backfiring. Just like when you were a kid and your mom told you to do something, a lot of times you ended up doing the exact opposite. READ MORE>>
