Speakers for the live conversation after the film
Avinash Rajagopal is the editor-in-chief of Metropolis magazine. He is an expert on product and interior design in the digital age, a historian of contemporary design and a frequent speaker at key industry events. He is the author of Hacking Design (Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, 2013). and has contributed to numerous volumes on architecture and design. He has lectured on design history and writing at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and around the world.
Kai-Uwe Bergmann is a partner at Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) who brings his expertise to proposals around the globe, including work in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Kai-Uwe heads up BIG’s business development with offices in over 35 countries as well as overseeing BIG’s urban development projects. Kai-Uwe most recently contributed to the resiliency plan "The Dryline" to protect 10 miles of Manhattan’s coastline.
Claire Weisz is a founding partner of WXY, whose work as an architect and urbanist focuses on innovative approaches to public space, structures and cities. The firm, globally recognized for its place-based approach to architecture, urban design, and planning, has played a vital role in design thinking around resiliency: combining the infrastructure of public space with working districts and communities. Claire was named one of Fast Company’s prestigious Most Creative People in Business in 2017, and was awarded the Medal of Honor from AIANY in 2018.
Speakers before the film
Gareth Brennan is the CEO, president and founder of Eventscape. Since 1993, leading artists, architects, and designers around the world have utilized Eventscape’s team for large scale complex features. Eventscape’s team operate at the forefront of digital fabrication, working in multiple materials with the latest equipment and technologies and supported by advanced CAD and parametric design software. Together, they “build the extraordinary®”.
Ambassador Markus Börlin was born in Basel in 1960 and holds a master’s degree in law from the University of Basel.  In 2010, Markus Börlin was appointed ambassador and head of mission in The Hague as well as permanent representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. In September 2014, he was named ambassador and permanent representative of Switzerland to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. In 2018 he was appointed as Consul General of Switzerland in New York and holds the title of ambassador.

The Nordic Design Diplomacy series is part of NYCxDESIGN's Design Days, May 13-18. This initiative will open virtual doors to the prestigious Nordic consular residences in a series of engaging talks with design in focus. This program combines traditional diplomacy with informal dialogue, to explore how design is used to share different perspectives on culture and values. These conversations invite two professionals in the field to share their experiences and perspectives on what it means working in different cultural contexts in the Nordic region and the USA.
