Subject: ADFF: ONLINE - Environmental Films

June 12, 2024

For this session, we are offering two films that explore the profound consequences of human design on the environment. We recommend watching Terraforma first and then House of Adaptation second for a holistic experience of witnessing a call and response to the escalating climate crisis.

Humans have impacted and designed our way into environmental issues that are having severe consequences on our environment. We also have the opportunity to design our way out of these problems. Both of these films ask us to think critically about what this process will continue to look like – and the role creative thinkers play in restoring our environment.

TerraForma is a film that examines how humans have impacted the environment of an isolated island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. House of Adaptation is one example of a climate-adaptive building in Rotterdam showcasing an example of designing our way out of the problem.

ADFF:ONLINE Series 6 – June 12- 26

TerraForma

2023 / 62 min / Ireland

Director: Laurence Durkin and Kevin Brennan

After a million years entirely devoid of life, the remote desert island of Ascension was engineered into a tropical paradise through a process of ‘terraforming’. By examining this unique scientific design process, TerraForma asks us to consider what transformation might mean for the fate of our planet. In a future when terraformed landscapes are more common, can human-engineered environments warp the very idea of what ‘nature’ means?

House of Adaptation

2023 / 42 min / Netherlands

Director: Onur Can Tepe

House of Adaptation takes the viewers on a journey through the minds of the people that gave life to a climate-adaptive building. The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) is an NGO that was looking for a place for their headquarters, so the city of Rotterdam proposed a donation– a building that will float with rising sea levels. The film captures the primary stakeholders including politicians, designers, and builders.

Submissions for the 2024/25 season!

ADFF receives submissions from around the world.

Our films are about a broad range of topics, all connected to the creative spirit of architecture and design. Our selection of films gravitates towards films that provide unique perspectives about the process behind architectural, graphic, product design, urban and environmental issues, architectural photography, historic preservation, and much more. Our goal is to identify films with impassioned, human stories that appeal to a sophisticated design audience and those with a general interest in architecture and design.

The deadline to submit a film for this year is July 1st 2024. To submit a film click here.
