Subject: ADFF Announces its 2022/23 Season

August 24, 2022

ADFF is thrilled to launch our 2022/23 season. This is our 14th year and once again we’ll be showing the best, new documentaries about architecture and design from around the world. This year's films cover a broad range of topics— sustainable fashion, iconic buildings past and present, city planning, unjust housing practices, innovative materials, and more. While each brings a unique perspective, together they all show us the impact architecture and design have on the world we live in.

I hope you have the opportunity to see some of these fun, thought-provoking and inspiring films in-person, and enjoy the ADFF lounges, see old friends, and meet new ones. The season will conclude in February with ADFF:ONLINE — a convenient way for those unable to attend the in-person screenings to see and share these amazing films with friends, colleagues and family.

See you at the theater,

Kyle Bergman

Festival Director

The 2022/23 season has five in-person festivals. The first three are scheduled in NY, Toronto, and Vancouver. After the new year, we continue on to LA and DC. Stay tuned!

This season, ADFF will screen one World Premiere and ten US Premieres. As always, we have a smorgasbord of films with something for everybody. Two Scandinavian films about pioneering women working in the second half of the 20th century. A film on gentrification in Oakland. A shorts program on redlining. A film on a famous modern housing project in London by the Smithsons and the controversy around why it failed. Films featuring specific buildings by well-known architects like Alvaro Siza and Renzo Piano. An Italian film contrasting buildings by Carlo Scarpa and Aldo Rossi. Two Dutch films, one showing the process of the celebrated Winy Maas of MVRDV, and another about Dutch designers whose budding careers are just starting to garner attention.

The complete lineup of films will be shared in next week's newsletter.

Opening Night Film

Fashion Reimagined

2022 / 100 min / UK

Director: Becky Hunter

co-presented by Design for Freedom

Can one woman change the course of an entire industry? Maybe. Fashion Reimagined follows Amy Powney, designer of the London brand Mother of Pearl and the daughter of environmental activists who raised her on a remote eco-friendly homestead, as she sets out to create a collection that is ethical and sustainable at every level, from fiber to finished garment. Powney’s journey takes a deep dive into the supply chain, uncovering its destructive cycle from deforestation to animal mutilation to farmer suicide. Set across three continents, her narrative is a modern retelling of the David and Goliath story that features a fiercely determined young woman fighting a complex behemoth while exposing the cost of our consumption along the way.
