The United State’s recognition of Mongolia in 1987 is an inseparable part of the bigger issue of Mongolia’s birth as a modern sovereign nation-state in the course of the twentieth century. This story goes back to the first decades of the 20th century when the USA first discovered Mongolia, with its capital of Urga. First Prime Minister of newly born Mongolia, Dogsomiin Bodoo, appealed to the United States for recognition, for Mongolia and the US to establish diplomatic relations.
This fascinating story of early encounters between Mongolia and the United States, that was unknown to Mongolians during the Soviet era is uncovered in the book ”The Impact of China and Russia on United States-Mongolian Political Relations in the Twentieth Century”.
